Spam Control Idea

Harvey
We're getting a lot of people who join the forum to post a link to a survey trying to get data from our skiers.  The post a link to "survey monkey" grab some data and disappear.

The links don't "work" because I have to "grant" permission to post links, but people can still see the link and paste it into a browser.

A moderator had an idea.

What if new posters can't start a thread until they've made X number of posts (maybe 5).  Can I do this within current functionality?  Can you make it happen for me?  I'd also like the ability to override the feature in special instances.

Hi Harvey,

I like the sound of the idea. It's certainly not bullet-proof but it gives you a slightly better chance of weeding your abusers out.

One aspect of the idea that you may not have considered - but might not worry you if it is only forum spammers you wish to stop - I have never tried it but am told, that when posting via email, simply changing the subject line when replying will make Nabble post it as a new topic on the forum. It would probably be difficult to distinguish between new topics and replies sent via email.

We disabled posting by email.  To many people thought they were responding to personal email and posting things that were personal.  We had several members quit over it.

Honestly I'm surprised no one else seems to have issue. IMO it's not easy to tell the difference between forum email and forum posting on a phone.

So, would  the user only be able to create a new post if he has already done 5 replies in other posts?

Yes.  But I'd like to be able to override it too.  Sometimes we get special guests posting and I'd like to be able to make an exception.

I'd hate to create another group, but that is one way to do it. Rather not if I don't have to.

PS Please don't implement when you figure it out.

I want to change the welcome email and forum rules before this happens.

Re: Spam Control Idea

I had another idea on how to handle this.  Currently I have to add a new member to a group called "Links" in order for a member to post live links in the forum. What if we added the ability to post new threads to that group?

I can tell pretty quickly if someone is a spammer or not.

In this case, only people from "link" group could create new topics? Let me know if is that that you want because in this case you just have to change permissions.

I think that makes total sense. Sorry I didn't think of it before.  Since I do the "link" thing for all new members anyway, it's no extra work and it gives me the flexibility to approve certain people right away and to wait in others.

Is this something I can do myself?  Also what would be involved in changing the name from "Link" to something else?

Re: Spam Control Idea

You can do it yourself, but let me know if you want me to have it done for you.

Change Permissions -> Create_topic and check only the groups that you want to give this permission.

Options -> Manage Users & Groups -> Link -> write the usernames from whoever you want to put in this group and save.

Re: Spam Control Idea

I think I'd have to do each subforum separately because the top level forum has no posting except for admins.

I remember I screwed something up a while ago by not fully understanding how permission changes should be made in subforums, so I would appreciate you doing it.

What is involved in changing the name of the Links permission group?  Are there macros that would have to be changed to account for the change?

If you want to change the name "link", you should edit the macro message_security also. So let me know if you want to do it and what will be its new name.

After that, I will change the permissions in your root forum and it will spread for all sub forums, ok?

The thing is that the root forum has different permissions than the subforums.  We don't have posts in the root as it's really a directory for the other sub forums.

(I can post in the root if I want to post an announcement, but only me.)

That makes me assume that each sub forum has to be done separately?

Could we leave LINKS as it is, uncheck REGISTERED and use MEMBERS for the Create Topic feature?

The only reason MEMBERS exists is so it will show in the dropdown:
