Re: Spam Control Idea

That should work.  I think it's just a matter of unchecking registered. I could do it or your could.  After you do it could you test to make sure the results are what we want?

Could we leave LINKS as it is, uncheck REGISTERED and use MEMBERS for the Create Topic feature?
Yes, we have to uncheck REGISTERED, can I do it now?

Re: Spam Control Idea

I just remember that when someone active the registration in the forum, he goes to the Member group. So, in this case, we have to create another group for the people who will be able to post. From this moment on you would transfer the users from members to the new group at the time you think they can create threads.
Make sense?

Re: Spam Control Idea

They don't automatically go into members I have to put them there.

I'd like to also change the welcome email to reflect the change.  I think there are multiple macros I have to change to make that happen. Which ones?

Looks like you are right. We just had a new member that I didnt add to MEMBERS and he was able to start a new thread.

I really DONT want another group. Any way to make it work with the MEMBERS group I have?

Re: Spam Control Idea

It's working fine, I've just registered a new user and he is not able to post new threads, he is not in the Members group.
The only issue is that you have to control the list of users in each group, members and registered. It might be a bit difficult to see who is in a list and not in the other since it is very long.

Re: Spam Control Idea

Registered should happen automatically right?

When I get new member, I get an email.

I look at the email address and I can usually tell if it's spam.

Also if you take an email address and just paste it into google, if the first result is a website called STOP FORUM SPAM then you know you have a know spammer.

If I decide that person is not a spammer I add them to LINKS and MEMBERS.  So my process would not change.

That's right. I was wrong.

So, do you want to change your welcome message? Please write it here.

Just show me the macros (I think there are multiple ones?) and I will change.

I just want to say that once you are approved by a moderator you will be able to post new threads and links.

And also say to email me if they want an exception.

I need to figure out the wording.

No problem on the edit.

This is great that we got this done WITHIN the functionality of Nabble.  Can't wait to see how it works.

As always REALLY appreciate all the help.

Re: Spam Control Idea

Harvey
This spam system is working incredibly well.

People register.

New registrants get and automatic email that tells them they I have to approve them before they can post links.

That part is key.

When I have a minute I google their email address.

If it doesn't show a result in the SERP here:

http://www.stopforumspam.com/

EXAMPLE:

https://www.google.com/#output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=smithjackson879%40yahoo.com+&oq=smithjackson879%40yahoo.com+&gs_l=hp.3...1019.1019.0.1817.1.1.0.0.0.0.152.152.0j1.1.0...0.0...1c..17.psy-ab.4G4BPXkQkx8&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.47810305,d.dmg&fp=319b1a1d8198be51&biw=1298&bih=688

I add them to the member group (can post a new thread)
I add them to the link group (they can post links)

or if they make a single post (reply) that shows they know something about the subject (SKIING!) I do the same.

My spam is WAY down. WAY WAY down.
