Private communities?

Is it possible to create a private community in Nabble, where you have to be approved before you can see the forums or join the mailing list?

Yes. You can create a forum (find the link on homepage) and then click on "Options > Users > Who can view & post?" (you will see different options there). The list of members and administrators can be managed under "Options > Users > Who are members?". Please take a look and let me know if you have more questions.

Yes. The idea is the same. Just go to "Options > Users > Change permissions" and make sure that only members (or any other group you want) can view the app.

I think that this is the same issue that I have.

Using Permissions, people can register to join the forum, but I (admin) am not notified about them. I want to move newly registered people to the Members group, and send them a free knitting pattern at the same time. I see this as equivalent to you approving your newly registered people and moving those that you approve into the Members group.

So you too need notification of a newly registered user. It is OK when you only have a few users, you can easily notice new people, but not when there are more of them. I have put all sorts of messages up to get people to write a brief post so that I know that they are on the forum, but they are not doing it...

I desparately need notification of newly registered people...

EDIT: Or allow us to sort the list of registered users into order of joining, so that the latest users are on the top of the list... then we only have to look at the top of the list until we get yesterdays date, or whatever...

I support this proposal. i.e. an option to be notified by email of new registrations. This status change is important as it happens automatically in the background. All other changes in user group are manually initiated by admin.

I'd go further with the second suggestion and suggest that we should be able to sort the "People" list by the date someone acquires their user group (registered/member/admin, etc.).  This would be very useful in itself and could serve as a fall-back for the main proposal.

What you mean by disconnected? Logged out? You have to change those permissions.
I didn't understand what you asked about inviting new members. Can you explain it better please?

Don't get too excited. I have no special influence on getting it done.

Your main proposal is a facility I was used to and found extremely helpful in my old YahooGroups

The fall-back suggestion is a feature found on phpBB forum software (and more, you can sort by username there as well). Again, I often find myself using it.

Not sure if this would work for you but Hugo created for me an automatic "Welcome" email to new forum members that I get BCC'd on. Lets me know when new members register.
HTTPS Please!

That would be perfect... but I'm on Free Support...

I can't believe that other people don't need this facility!

I created a ticket for this feature in our internal system. This should be a new add-on that admins can enable (Options > Application > Extras & add-ons). Since most of the work has been done for Harvey, this should be available soon.

now it's OK about privacy when i'm logged out (the other day, i think it's because of a "ghost" in my browser : i've been logged in on the same session, and then logged out try to read messages)

about invitation : when i use "users / manage suscribers / Add Subscribers", add an adress in the box and push on "Invite Subscribers", the system answers me : "Failed -- This user doesn't have permission to view this application (add him/her to a group that allows this and try again)", even if this user is in a group...
the matter is that it's not about "add him/her to a group" but "add him/her as members"

sincerely yourrs,
Pierrre

I missed this one the other day. I may not have understood you.

In Nabble jargon "members" is one class of "group". The default groups are: "anyone", "registered", "Administrators" and "Members".

Your message suggests that you have set permissions so that "anyone" cannot view your application.

Someone who is in a group that cannot view your application cannot subscribe as they will not be authorised to see the link where they confirm their address when they receive their invitation.

If the forum is to be private with "anyone" banned from viewing the forum. I suggest that you add a group "subscribers", give members of that group appropriate permissions, (You could use the default group "Members" for this purpose, but using a specific "Subscribers" group would allow you to use "Members" for another purpose in the future) then place the email addresses of those you intend to invite in that group BEFORE you send the invitation.

(I confess this is untested, but logic says it ought to work. It's also possible a Nabble mail list will work better for you, but I have not explored the facilities they offer.)

This solution is ready. You can go to "Options > Application > Extras & Add-ons" and select the "Emails & Notifications | Notify me when someone registers" add-on.

I always go to the outer-most layer of Nabble, and then things apply everywhere...

As Admin, select Options > Application > Extras and Add-Ons > Email and Notifications... And Save.

Hi Anne,
I actually meant sending an automatic email to a new user when they register. not sure you can do that with the below.
Thanks!
