Take ownership of http://tapestry.1045711.n5.nabble.com/

Thiago HP
Hi!

I'm Thiago H. de Paula Figueiredo (the name field in the Nabble user configuration is too short), one of the comitters and Project Management Comitee member of the Apache Tapestry open source project, as you can check here: http://tapestry.apache.org/about.html. As described here, http://tapestry.1045711.n5.nabble.com/Validation-Message-with-Tapestry-4-tp5718594p5718602.html, we would like to make tapestry-dev to be read-only, as its meant to be used to discuss the development of Tapestry itself, not using Tapestry, and we get a lot of posts in tapestry-dev that shouldn't be posted.

We would also like to change the forums' descriptions.

How can we do that?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Thiago,

What do you want is to "hide" Tapestry-dev(here http://tapestry.1045711.n5.nabble.com/Tapestry-f2375124.subapps.html) and make it only for Tapestry-development?

another question, which type of application are you using here:  http://tapestry.1045711.n5.nabble.com/Tapestry-f2375124.subapps.html? those two subcategories are different forums?

What we want is to make the Nabble interface to the dev@tapestry.apache.org mailing list that can be found at http://tapestry.1045711.n5.nabble.com/Tapestry-Dev-f2438278.html read-only or alternatively have it removed completely.

In addition, we want to have the Nabble interface to the users@tapestry.apache.org mailing list that can be found at http://tapestry.1045711.n5.nabble.com/Tapestry-User-f2375125.html require users to subscribe before being allowed to post to that list.

Your Developer Group:

I have a "Mixed" application at the top level of a forum I maintain with "Forum" applications beneath. In that configuration if you check the box at:

Options > Application > Extra & Add-ons > Content > Smart application pages

you will be able to make a sub-forum disappear, by removing its "View" permission for those user groups you do not wish to see it (but read the text about "Smart application pages" and note the caveats).

I have found this feature doesn't work if the top-level application is a "Forum". Other than "Mixed", I don't know for which other applications, it may work.

Your User mail list:

I'm still thinking about your this. It may require some special NAML coding (I have never tried removing the "Create_topic" and "Reply" permissions from a sub-forum and seeing whether subscribers can still post)...

Further question:

Is it essential that users subscribe?  Why should they not be allowed to post on the forum if that is their preferred method of posting.

If the problem is that you are concerned that users can edit posts on the forum interface and that causes subscribers to reply to out of date versions of the current archive version then see the post :
http://support.nabble.com/Convert-Forum-to-Mail-List-tp7580384p7582229.html
for a simple NAML override to stop editing of posts (except by Administrators) - forcing other users to make replies to update posts and hence generating a new mail for those who are subscribers.

Yes it is essential. Those "forums" as you call them are mailing lists. Those lists is where we conduct our business, as does every other Apache project. The Nabble interface to those lists is just a convenience for users that don't know how to operate a mail client. So every post made by a Nabble user who didn't click the "subscribe" button beforehand has to be moderated through to the authoritative mailing list.

It happens that moderation mails get dropped or delayed, potentially leaving the poster with no response, simply because their email doesn't get through to the mailing list.

Anyway, it seems that we can solve a lot of the problems by ourselves, if we had the correct permission. So I further request for Thiago and me to be granted full administrative access to the list archives at Nabble. You can establish our identity at http://tapestry.apache.org/about.html.

Hi uli,

Normally, I would say that you need to email the administrators of a forum (click their avatar which takes you to a screen where you can send an email to them. However, I now notice that the two administrators on the forum are both Nabble staff so, in this case, it does seem appropriate that you ask for those permissions here, as I am sure they will be aware of your role within the group.

You face a common problem for Nabble users who don't appreciate that Nabble only provides an archive of posts to a mail list and users need both to subscribe to the list and register on the forum if they are to post via the forum.

Certainly, either permissions need to be changed to prevent posting via the forum, or you need to edit the NAML, as suggested in my last post, so interaction through the forum does not create problems for subscribers.

If you adopt the first solution, then I'd advise that you place a pinned topic explaining to forum users that registration (which for most forums would allow posting) is not sufficient to get you posting rights and you have to post via email.

As to your point that you operate mail lists, it appears unfortunate that the Nabble team are too focused on web interfaces. GMail's "conversation" mode rather than the traditional separation of "Inbox" and "Outbox" layout of mail is a case in point. It means that Nabble consider it unnecessary to return your own post to a mail list, thereby breaking conventional message threading in a traditional mail client. I had to get another piece of custom code inserted in one of my mail lists archived at Nabble to make things work properly. (Check out the this post and the replies: http://support.nabble.com/Convert-Forum-to-Mail-List-tp7580384p7580457.html )

I've added you and Ulrich Stärk as forum admin. I saw your user's permissions setting and I guess now you already have the "read-only" mode on, right?
To change the description you can go at: Options -> Application -> Edit Name and Description.

Hello, Pedro!

Thanks for the help.

I still cannot edit the Apache Tapestry forums/mailing lists, though. :-(

Cheers!

Check that Pedro has editing the correct username.

When logged in, click your username in the top right corner, select "Account Settings" and see if "Administrators" appears in the list of groups to which you belong.

Providing it is there then you should be able to see all the administrator options on the top level forum.

Report what you do see under the "Options" menu.
