Hi
I was wandering if it was possible to mail all members of your forum at once? This may be useful to give site updates etc. If not, do you plan to build this feature in? Regards |
Probably not possible. To users who prefer the web interface (in other words, opting to not receive e-mails), receiving e-mails contrary to that preference might be an annoyance. Personally, I would use pinning to draw attention to special items. Regards Graham |
Graham is right. Besides that, the main problem of this feature from Nabble's point of view is that spammers could easily abuse it. I mean, they can add a lot of members and then use this feature to send their junk emails.
But soon Nabble will be very flexible and almost everything will be possible. The templates feature (to be released in some months) will certainly add this possibility, but forum owners will have to provide their own SMTP server to send such emails. So Nabble will be protected from bad users. |
Ok, however on other forums when you register you have the option of receiving admin emails when you register.
This is essentially the feature I am looking for is to send out an admin email to all the members of my forum, to let them know about site updates, new features etc, to help drive visitors back to the site and improve traffic. You will see that I have a free business advertising forum below in my signature and I would like to contact users of this forum to prompt them to return to the site and also offer them the opportunity to unsubscribe should they wish too. When do you think the SMTP option will be available? |
Comparable to the Nabble Latest Features forum under <http://nabble-support.1.n2.nabble.com/-f1.subapps.html>. This is one of very few forums to which I do subscribe, the e-mails are very welcome. Strongly encourage your new members to subscribe to the sub-forum that you treat as most critical/important. Kicking the ball around now: might future features allow an administrator to *force* subscription for a particular sub-forum? The onus then would be on the administrator to use that privilege with discretion. |
Graham is correct again. You could create an "Announcements" sub-forum and invite people to subscribe to it. You should be the only person allowed to post to that sub-forum and each post would go to all subscribers (some help here). The SMTP feature still needs some months to be prepared. We are working hard on a lot of good things. The forum owner may implement a set of templates and *force* the subscription, but people can always complain here if they feel this is not right. We can easily shut forums down if they are being handled abusively, but I don't think this is going to happen. |
So is the SMTP option available yet? It has been a lot longer than a few months?

The "templates" feature was released Aug 11, 2011. By then it became known as NAML (Nabble Application Markup Language)
However, it does not include an SMTP module off the peg. You would have to write your own NAML macro to achieve that, but see my response to your other recent post.
