It's free open source software so there's no cost to install phpBB at your host. As I say, all I needed to embed my copy in my site was self-taught HTML and CSS knowledge.

Clearly you may require help if you're using one of the "no coding required" web based site creation tools.

I was referring to SMF that I mentioned previously, which is also free to install, but can be expensive as there's a charge for any mod you make to the forum.

There's only a charge if you employ one of the developers to make the mods for you.

The source is open and the licence allows you to edit it as much as you like yourself.

But I confess the commercial approach of the development team it was one of the things that intimidated me at first.

Yep that's perfectly true, there's only a charge if you hire a SMF developer, but don't know if I know enough to do my own mods though.

Right, it's been some days since someone responded so I suppose this thread should be knocked on the head, so to speak.  I think I've now accepted the reality that registered members of my forum, including myself, can only login if Firefox is used, unless I migrate to another platform.  Anyway, a big thankyou to everyone that's helped me so far.

Welcome.  Wish you well.

Our move to Invision is set for Tuesday and we are thrilled to be able to take all of our posts with us.  But it is bittersweet as the 7 years on Nabble have been good.  However, the writing is on the wall so it is time to move.
I'm not Nabble support, but have Nabble running on my Weebly website: http://www.garysgaragemahal.com/

I can only echo Gary's comments. When I discovered Nabble in 2010 it was an extremely useful product, with some additional features long removed. Technical support was excellent and free, if you could tolerate the adverts. Back then you could subscribe to "Premium Support" that got rid of the ads and gave you a priority forum that got near instant responses - with free users getting read-only access.

After about five years Google changed things and it was reported that Nabble income had dropped dramatically. Staff changes took place, and various alternative funding methods were tried but, it seems, none worked.

By the time the point came when the half dozen servers were reduced to one the writing was on the wall. It remained free, funded entirely out of Franklin's pocket. You have to thank him for being so generous, but from that point on it was a personal project and all meaningful support ceased.

If I have any complaint it's only that Franklin continued to allow new users onto the platform. I feel it would have been sensible to lock up the shop and be clearer to existing users, advising everyone to find an alternative service.

Thanks, I hope Invision works for you, albeit a bit outside my price range at the moment.  I'll probably go with either SMF or phpBB.

Snap!  I remember 2010 well, which is when I used Nabble for the first time; for a news-oriented ezine to do with a popular mmorpg.  There were no embedding or logging-in issues at all, whatever the browser and SSL was already widely used.
