Can I require a predetermined password for registration

surfer
I would like to use Nabble to host a forum for a select group of people in the military. In addition to listing specific guidelines about posting, to protect them from harm they could bring on themselves unintentionally, I need to make sure no one who is uninvited can register to gain access to the forum contents/posts. My thought is that it can be as simple as requiring a password that I must provide for them to register. The way Nabble works now, of course, is that anyone registering for forum access picks their own password. Is it possible to set it up to require a specific password of my choosing, that I can enter and change as needed in the Nabble administrator's settings menus? I think I can password protect the page on my website that links to the Nabble forum, but I don't know how to put the same wall in place if someone goes to the forum URL directly, outside my site. Is Nabble not suited to this type of forum, or is there a way to provide the security I am describing? Thank you in advance.

Instead of your approach of an Admin selected password, try this:

Turn off the VIEW permission for ANYONE and REGISTERED. (All such people will see is a login/register screen, or one inviting them to seek permission for access.)

Ensure that VIEW, CREATE_TOPIC and REPLY permissions are granted to the MEMBERS group (plus anything else you feel is appropriate).

Let anyone register, with their chosen password but only assign the MEMBERS group to your chosen "select group". (Presumably you would recognise the these people on the basis of the email address they give or their explanation on why they should be granted access.)

Job done!

Volunteer Helper - but recommending that users move off the platform!
Once the admin for GregHelp now deleted.

Have you, as Admin, looked at the permissions facility when you are in the outer most layer of your Nabble software:
Select Options > Users > Change permissions, and Manage users and groups?

Using these, you can control who has access to what, but as things stand at present, you will have to maually move registered users to a specialist group. However, Nabble are working on new templates to give us more control across all areas... and it may just be that this is one feature that might be included... hopefully!

Edit: Greg... you beat me to it!

Thanks very much Greg. I followed your instructions and I believe that gives me what I was looking for.
My appreciation to all involved in creating Nabble.

I did look at the permissions settings but I didn't fully understand the hierarchy and flexibility that was available. Thanks for your help! I believe I have it set up to do exactly what I had in mind.
