Yeah, I should have left the evidence in place. What I did was to delete all the posts first (there were only about 12) and then I could delete the blog.

The email address of the author of those posts had changed and I was unable to edit his address. I'm guessing that is what caused the SMTP failures as the deletion process tried to email him copies of his posts.
