I checked all view permissions on all levels, they are everywhere the same:
"view" (as well as everything else) : "modified" :  only for "members" and "administrators" and "authors"
except on the top most level, where "view" is allowed for anyone

I don't have any posts at the top level. Everything is in subcategories.
