I thought I read somewhere ( but can't find it now), how to set up a search on my site so that in addition to searching my site pages, it will also search the data in nabble (which is imbedded on my site, but the data is actually on the nabble site).
That may have been a post of mine!

As your site is behind a login/password system you can't expect Goggle and other search engines to trawl it by itself, so you'll need to use a specialist tool. Many favour Google's Custom Search. I prefer http://atomz.com/ . It has these features (amongst others):

• You can customise its appearance to integrate well with your site
• You can set up multiple entry points for the spider (e.g. Nabble and your main site).
• You can initiate a full spider of your site at any time and control automated spidering

The reason I abandoned Google Custom search was that I could find no way to initiate a full crawl of my site and keep its index up to date after a major site overhaul (particularly relevant for the software manual on my nPOPuk site) and Google seemed to take weeks to complete a full crawl of my site.

See a couple of examples in action at:

http://www.seahawk17.plus.com/index.htm (Try a search for "hull")
http://npopuk.org.uk/3.01/index.html (Try a search for "ssl")

(Note how the search results pages show an Atomz URL in the address bar but due to the ability to wrap the results in a template that matches your site most users would never notice. - I really must address the styling issue on the nPOPuk site so the URL lines follow convention and show in green!)
