Oops! I've just done a test and that doesn't seem to be strictly true.

When I re-registered I used a slightly different username (by mistake). All the old message content continued to appear as "Deleted by user".

Realising my mistake I've just changed the username back to the original one and suddenly the content of the "content deleted" messages has re-appeared.
