You must keep those apps under a common parent if you want to have a shared login. So, yes, the first step is to create the common parent and migrate everything under it. After that, you would have to hide the common parent from users so that they don't try to visit it. This should be easy because such parent would show up only in the breadcrumbs trail, which can be changed through templates.
