now the whole forum is gone
is there an obvous reason for this that I'm overlooking?

Which post are you trying to delete?
Note that you cannot physically delete a post if it belongs to another user. If you are the owner of the forum, you may remove the post from the forum (but the post will still exist in Nabble's database and it will be available in the author's profile page)
