Thanks for the clarifications.  I had tried changing the forum formats, but didn't try them all.  Eventually, ended up re-creating the forums and using one of the other formats.

Related, it would be nice to have graphical examples of the various formats in the format options page, which preview the differences between formats.  Not unlike the theme preview on the theme page.
