Distinguish between read and un-read discussions/forums.

Is it possible to distinguish between read and un-read discussions/forums.

Having just settled into our new forum today I'm finding it very frustrating not being able to easily understand which discussions/forums have updated posts since my last visit.

Any help with this would be really good.
