receiving notifications for only main forum without subforums

nnako
Hi,

when I subscribe for notification in the main forum (starting page of a forum application), I receive not only the "new message" notifications of this main forum part but of all the subforums as well.

Is it possible to subscribe for only  the main forum contents, without automatically receiving all the notifications for the subforums as well?

Thanks.

Have you checked "Receive every message posted..." or "Receive new topics only"? The second choice works only for the forum you've subscribed. You don't receive messages form its sub forum until you subscribe each one.

Hi Pedro,

Another possible solution for nnako is to re-configure his forum.

His top level forum needs to become just a "place holder" for all his content. to do that he needs to create a new sub-forum and then move all the existing "Main Forum" topics into that new sub-forum.

Then it is best to change the top level forum to one of the alternative applications, such as "Board", "Category" or "Mixed" which are designed for this "place holder" approach.

Depending on the application chosen this may remove the "New Topic" option from the menu at the top level, forcing users to post to the appropriate area only. In some of the applications, e.g. "Mixed", it may be necessary to remove  the "Create-topic" permission from the top level application, but over ride this state on all lower levels. That ensures that when anyone uses the "New Topic" link instead of being able to post they are presented with a list of sub-forums to which they may post, while preventing them posting in the top level application itself.

Once you have a structure in place where the "Main Forum" has no sub-forums users can subscribe to the "Main Forum" are and not also get emails from any of the other areas. (You can also subscribe to the "top level" and get the posts for the entire forum, the "main forum" and all other areas as well.

I checked the first option in order to get any message from any topic in the main forum and not only the new topics. Is it true that the first option notifies about any new message in any (even subsequent) forums and the second option regards not the subforums?

I'll try this one out when I find a time slot. Thanks, Greg.

No!

When you subscribe with the option "Receive every message posted in xxxx" you get ALL the messages for that forum and ALL of its sub-forums (because the sub-forums count as being part of the parent forum).

When you subscribe with the option "New topics only" you get any initial post, but no replies to that initial post, for that forum and all of its sub-forums.

The new topics option is useful if you are not interested in reactions to a new topic (If you subscribe to the blog of an expert, you may only want to received his posts, not the praise or criticism of other readers.)

If you want your users to subscribe to a "Main Forum" without getting messages posted to your sub-forums, then your "Main Forum" must itself be a sub-forum with no further sub-forums. That is why I described creating a new "Parent" that will hold your main forum and all your other sub-forums.

Actually, you do not receive messages from sub forums when you subscribe as "New topics only".

Thanks for reminding me Pedro.

I recall learning that from your correspondence with Coleen on the Premium Support Forum.
