inserted PNG image misinterpreted as JPEG

Graham Perrin
See for example
<http://n2.nabble.com/file/n2264328/digesting%2BRSS.jpeg
— the result of inserting a PNG
— note the .jpeg suffix to the file name.

This happens only rarely.

I have a sense that it's more likely to happen if the PNG is above some size threshold.

Priority: 5 (lowest).

For reference, I attach (as a file, not an image) the PNG file that was interpreted as JPEG:
digesting+RSS.png

Environment: Safari 3.2.1 (5525.27.1), Mac OS X 10.5.6, Intel; and I typically drag the image from ~/Desktop to the Choose File button (AFAIK the ability to drop there is a feature of Mac OS X).

.png extension is present but not shown in Finder:

Another incident: <http://n2.nabble.com/CSS%3A-how-to-underline-links-only-whilst-hovering-%28not-all-the-time%29--tp2263762p2268317.html>

Not a priority. I see no-one else reporting this.

Workaround is to preview message and correct before posting but I allowed the incident above, for reference.

FWIW I vaguely recall, a few years ago, that some PNGs screen shots produced by (older versions of) Mac OS X would fail to present properly to some versions of Firefox.

Here's an archive of the two PNGs: Archive.zip

Large PNGs with Alpha misinterpreted as JPEG?

Graham Perrin
Experimenting, using Apple Preview 4.1 (469.4) to save the PNGs without the Alpha:
