Users, Groups and Permissions

Options
IMPORTANT: If you use permissions, you will have to set them up again.  The old members and administrators were converted to temporary groups and the old permissions were not converted at all.  So you should reorganize your groups and then set permissions in your app (e.g., forum, blog, gallery).

Nabble has improved how users, groups and permissions work. Here is a summary:

(1) Now you can create as many user groups as you want. All apps come with four default groups:

    Anyone: All users belong to this group, including unregistered users.
    Authenticated: Users whose email is available in the database. Basically, registered users and people who posted to mailing lists (archives only).
    Members: Default group. You should define the permissions for this group.
    Administrators: Users with special privileges that can control your application.

(2) For each user, you can select which groups he/she participates. This option is available in the user profile page:

(3) You can organize groups and users by clicking on "Options > Users > Manage users & groups". Each group has a textarea with users and you can add and remove them according to your goals. To remove a group, just remove all users from it and save the changes ("members" and "administrators" are fixed groups and thus cannot be removed).

(4) You can configure what each group can do by clicking on "Options > Users > Change permissions". You can override these settings in subcategories (e.g., sub-forums).

Re: Users, Groups and Permissions

The dratted Permission Changes notice has gone! At least, on my forums. It's visible now only to Admins.

Thanks, Hugo!

Hi - I made two new groups for two subcategories. No Problem to do this.

But if I change the VIEW of this subcategorie to this group...... I can't see this subcategorie anymore. But in my profile I'm member of this group. I can see it only, when I change it to: VIEW ANYONE.

Can you help me?

Ok, Does this not automatically add the forum creator (myself) to be able to do everything??

I am asking because I am working on permissions and I tried to add a new post and it is telling me to request permission from myself???  Do I have to add myself somewhere to be able to post everywhere??

Here is a screen shot..  I am sooooooo confused..  I havent even ventured into users and groups yet..I am scared.. lol

I don't see a way to delete posts and topics.  I used to delete spam posts and mis-addressed mail which sometimes gets through but now I can't.  I checked permissions and I have permissions but there is no delete permission nor a delete option on the post page.

permission to change date, but repeated prompts to log in

In reply to this post by Hugo <Nabble>
I am a logged in administrator, and I am the author of post <http://osaf-selected-lists.3138168.n2.nabble.com/RV-Your-Website-is-Out-of-order-tp5570154p5573906.html>, but when in threaded view I try to change the date of that post:

* Nabble prompts me to login again
* I enter good credentials but again there's the login prompt:

For node 1653123 at <http://osaf-selected-lists.3138168.n2.nabble.com/template/TplServlet.jtp?tpl=change_permissions&node=1653123> the inherited permission appears proper:

checks to the left

That's correct.
Now I'm confused.

Administrators is to the left of Members.

I might grant Create_sub_apps to administrators but I would not want that permission automatically extended to ordinary members.

This is the same problem I was having.  You have to add yourself as an administrator with your email address.  Click on Options, Users, Manage Users and Groups, then click on Administrators and add your email address in the white box, click save changes at the bottom.

I hope this helps you?

Thanks, I will try that.  One would assume that creators would automatically be able to do everything without adding themselves anywhere..  Anyway, thanks for the help.. I appreciate it..

Where is the documentation for each permission keyword?

I cannot figure out which permission allows Admins to delete a post. I want to give that permission to a Moderator group.

Or is at as I expect, a hard-coded feature in the source code?

Yes, we renamed "Owners" to "Authors" to make things more intuitive. Note that this group is not a real group of users where you can add/remove people to/from. This group represents the authors of posts in your application. For example, if you select that "Authors" can view, then users will be able to view their own posts (even if you mark the forum as private by disabling "Anyone" and "Authenticated" for that "Can_view" row).

Re: Users, Groups and Permissions

In reply to this post by Paul Hadley
This permission is defined in the Nabble template language, which is still under development. In the near future users will be able to change templates and redefine whatever they want. So what you want to do will be possible when we release templates.

At this point, deletion is defined like this:
<macro name="can_delete" requires="user" dot-attribute="node-attr">
	<n.owns.node-attr/>
</macro>

<macro name="can_delete_recursively" requires="user" dot-attribute="node">
	<n.is_site_admin/>
</macro>
In other words, can_delete returns true if the user owns the node. The second macro says: can_delete_recursively (e.g., can delete the whole branch) returns true if the user is an administrator of the site (root forum/blog/gallery/etc.). Templates will have good documentation, so don't worry about the syntax right now.

Please go to your profile and click on "Add/Remove Groups", then select the "Administrators" group for you and save. This should solve your problem. Please let me know if you still have issues.

Please make sure you are in the "Administrators" group. You can go to your profile and click on "Add/Remove Groups" to add your account to that group. Then you should see the delete option in posts.

I think I understand. If only Members can post, then any Member who has actually POSTED is in the Author group, and can make changes on his/her post only?  Thanks Hugo.

Do I still have to be both the author AND admin to change dates of posts? If so, this is somewhat problematic in our newspaper.

EDIT: I would rather not allow authors to edit name or description of applications.  Anyone else agree?

I don't even have add/remove groups available. When clicking into my profile, I have my starred items, my posts, my personal settings, and log out. Thats it.

Sorry for the confusion. Please add your account to the "Administrators" group because we didn't do this automatically. So open your profile and click on "Add/Remove Groups", then select "Administrators" and save. Another possibility is to click on "Options > Users > Manage users & groups", select the "Administrators" tab and type your email in the text area and save.

Re: Users, Groups and Permissions

Unless I am looking in the wrong area, I do not even have the option of groups or any of that. I have been looking on my site all over and it is just not there. So I have no way of adding myself to an administrators group. I don't on the nabble support page here either. I checked just in case I was missing something.

Re: Users, Groups and Permissions

You must login as the owner of the forum (the account that shows at the bottom of the front page). You may post a link to your forum and I will take a look.
