Simplifying the Support Forum

Franklin <Nabble>
Administrator
I want to simplify the structure of this support forum.  I just want one flat forum with all threads.  We have just one paying customer right now, so premium support isn't justified.  I recognize that GregChapman is very helpful here, so in a flat forum, I would answer his questions first, everyone else's questions after.

Does anyone have any comments before I do this?

I read ,most of it goes over my head.

Personally, it would help to see more presence from someone representing Nabble, rather than relying on a very helpful volunteer.

How that is done is down to you .

The most important thing for users is to get timely responses that provide solutions for their issue.

I'm happy to live with Nabble's decision on how to make that easiest for you.

I'm with Geofredo. It is important for the credibility of Nabble that where ever possible those solutions should be provided by a member of staff. They should be allowed some time to sleep! :-) That's where other users, such as Geofredo and i can be helpful.

There should be no need to answer my questions first if the forum is monitored frequently enough. The only reason for me being grateful for free access to Premium Support over the last year was because I sometime felt Free Support was not being adequately monitored and I wanted to alert Nabble to what appeared to be likely to be a system-wide issue or one that appeared to be affecting users on a particular server.  With Franklin's arrival here that issue appears resolved and I have no need for any special status when it comes to speed of response.

Others may not be aware that I have been given some special permissions on the forum that allow me to move suspicious items to the Spam folder (found under "Free Support > Archive") and I can ban users (and delete their posts) that I judge are clearly spam. Assuming that Franklin is in a wildly different time zone to me and active at different times (I'm based in the UK), it might be useful if I could retain equivalent facilities under a revised forum structure.

Here is the current situation.  I am the only one doing Nabble support and programming.  I will check this forum about every 2 days.  I am involved in other projects as well.

Nabble doesn't make any money.  I hope to replace Nabble with a better system eventually, when I have time to program it.  The new system will be open source, so I hope it will naturally have more people supporting it.  And I hope the new system will grow big enough to make money.

Permissions shouldn't be effected by changing the structure of this forum.

This is a good decision.  The key for me is the definition of the word "eventually."

What is the fee to go "premium", and what do you get in return?

This post was updated on .
There is no "Premium" any more, either "Premium Site" (no adverts) or "Premium Support" (Priority response to posts on the support forum and customised coding for your forum).

My understanding is because giving priority support diverts Franklin's attention from getting "Blasma" ready for release. That's the open source replacement for Nabble and that's why all reference to Premium tucked away on the archived "Old" support site.

Again, my understanding is that all Nabble forums will be migrated to the new platform which will be "open source" so should attract more programmers to the project! I know there's more it it than that but those are the hints that have been posted on the forum by Hugo and Franklin over the last few months.

I should have added, the "more to it than that" includes the return of advertising on the forums hosted on Blasma and, I suspect, the return of "Premium Sites". Some of this is putting 2+2 together. I may have come up with a five answer.

I have no plans for regular advertising on Blasma.  What I learned from Nabble is that advertising doesn't make much money unless one is really big.  And if one is big, it is worth doing custom advertising like sponsored threads, something like what Facebook does.  So that is what we will do, no ads when small and then sponsored threads if we get big.

Just so you know, right now I am not even working on Blasma yet.  I need to spend a few weeks to make Nabble really stable so that it will just work.  Part of this is upgrading Postgres to simplify backups.

Thanks to both of you for your explanations and your help. I've been on for a bit over a week and am sufficiently impressed that I've asked my small base of 10 users if we are ready to go live.  I anticipate the response will be positive and we are here to stay.

And I look forward to Blasma. Please keep us informed and let me know if there is anything I can do to help - short of coding. (I was once good in PDP8 machine language, but that has been almost half a century ago.)

When you make this new system, Please, Pretty Please, make it work on SSL.  We love the features of Nabble - particularly the ability to interact with the forum completely via email (some of my members will NOT go to a website to interact) as well as the ability to interact online.  But the SSL issues are keeping us from being able to upgrade the rest of our website to SSL as Nabble doesn't support it.

Thank you,
Coleen
