Red X

I have been having a problem since I did a windows update a couple days ago with a red x in my mail headers and I can't insert any smileys with my aol mail. I have tried everything to fix it, I have aol desktop 9.6 and the latest version and aol 9.5. I'm also using windows 7, I thought maybe it was just my computer but the same thing happens on my husbands computer too. Does anyone have any suggestions what I can check for to fix this? Thankyou for any help I can get.
