Read only archive

nomad11
Hello

I plan to link my mailman list to nabble. Though only use nabble as a read (and search) only archive for mailman. I set permissions for the forum for anyone to view, and everything else has admin setting.

When viewing the forum as Anyone (guest), you can see a 'New Topic' link which when clicked asks you to login/register. Is is possible for this link to be hidden, as it may be confusing as it's only supposed be a read-only archive.

EDIT: similarly when viewing a post, you can see REPLY link, can this also be hidden.

Am I missing a setting?

thanks

I don't think you are missing anything, but don't despair.

Nabble is due to release (real soon now!) a new "Templates" facility, that should allow you to make such a change.

I also noticed that the top line below the forum title reads:

"This forum is an archive for the mailing list ... (more options) Messages posted here will be sent to this mailing list."

Can this be hidden or edited?

thanks

I don't run any mail list archives, so can't speak with authority, but I suspect you can't remove that option.

I believe that the assumption at Nabble is that either:

# You will want to keep the archive private and you will only allow existing subscribers to view it
or
# You will allow non-subscribers to view to encourage archive visitors to subscribe (hence the options presented).

Bare in mind that no one will be able to post via Nabble unless they ALSO subscribe to the list.

So what is your reason for making the archives public - if it's not to help attract subscribers?

Regular mailman archives are difficult/impossible to search and nor do they present threads clearly. Nabble on the other hand can act like a mailing list archive and is  much more user friendly.

Indeed, making the archives public will help attract subscribers, though I would want them to subscribe via mailman, not nabble (as I plan to use nabble as a read only archive).

The current message on nabble - "Messages posted here will be sent to this mailing list" would be confusing in this respect, as it implies readers can post to the mailing list via nabble. Though if you only wanted nabble to act as a read only archive, there should be an option to edit this line out?

thanks

In the mailing list settings page (Options > Application > Mailing list settings) there is an option to hide the mailing list information from users. You can try that option and that line should go away.

Ah, many thanks for pointing that out - works great.

Now I'll wait for the possibility of hiding the 'New Topic' and 'Reply' links.
