we have someone who's been entering the private area, and as far as i know, they're not in our private group. there's nothing sinister in there, but we share personal details inside the private forums that are for trusted friends only.

if this is a random intruder, first i apologize to nabble for the implication, and then i ask if you'll please help me stop this IP from getting to my application.
You're a little vague on which your "private area" is, but I note that there's only one sub-forum, "Usergroup Forums", that needs registration and authorisation to enter, so assume it is this one you refer to. (Intrigued, you'll find I have sent a "Request Access" message from an address whose InBox I ignore.)
Clearly there is no method that will stop someone setting up a script and randomly registering on any Nabble forum. (You see the results here often enough in the spam messages that are sometimes posted here - and some parts of the old USSR are well known as being the source of botnets that will send such traffic.)
Are you saying that you just have this one source who is repeatedly registering and getting as far as the "request access" screen (Something you must accept!) or are you suggesting that there are getting further and breaking Nabble security? (Something more serious)?
I note that you are using the "Forum" application. If you use some of the other Nabble applications, (I know it works with "Mixed") you can completely hide private sub-forums, so that those who you do not assign the appropriate group membership to will not even have access to the "Request Access" screen. Maybe you need to implement such a system?
