Postings to grails-user still not possible for me

rawi
Hi Hugo

sorry to annoy you again.

This issue is unfortunately still unresolved for me.

I tried again couple of days ago and my posting is still not accepted ?!

Any hint?

Thanks
Rawi

I think you should follow the instructions on the grails page:
http://grails.org/Mailing+lists

If this doesn't work, then you should contact the Grails team because Nabble doesn't control that mailing list.

Hugo,

Would it be possible to turn the grails-user mailing list archive into something more like a forum? Perhaps by allowing Nabble registered users access to the mailing list? Certainly many users seem to favour the forum approach.

If so, we could embed the forum into the grails.org website.

Thanks,

Peter

I am not sure I understand your request. The mailing list server at grails.org only accept subscribers, so there is nothing that we can do to let people in, except asking them to subscribe. Our archive is already like a forum, but connected to the mailing list. Anyone can post to the forum, but only subscribers will have their posts going through the list. Do you mean we should remove the mailing list from the forum and let it live as a standard forum? In any case, embedding the forum/archive onto the website would certainly be useful to the whole community. Please let me know what you think.

Hi Hugo,

So there seem to be two options. The first is to allow Nabble registered users to post to the mailing list without explicitly registering at Codehaus. Is this possible? I could get in touch with the Codehaus folks or the project lead to configure the mailing list as required.

The second option appears to be unlinking the forum from the mailing list. What are the implications of this? I take it users registered with the mailing list won't automatically be able to post to the forum? It would also mean that people have to register explicitly with the Nabble forum to get the e-mails, I take it?

I would prefer the first option if it's possible.

Thanks,

Peter

This is the best option in my opinion. Nothing would be changed in the Nabble system because each post already becomes an email to the list. So this depends only on the codehaus team.

The only implication is that the forum won't be updated with emails from the list. Also, new posts won't be sent to the list and questions will depend on people visiting the forum more often. I think we could create another forum - if this is the desired option - and leave the current archive read-only.

Apparently Codehaus rejigged their mail a couple of weeks ago:
We corrected our mail interfaces so that they could send the correct allow requests through a few weeks ago.
So should this work now?

Thanks,

I guess they are talking about the subscription email (a.k.a "allow" email), not emails sent to the list. I thought more about this and I believe they won't let anyone post because spammers will abuse this. So subscription is an important step. So you may talk to them about this or start an independent forum for Grails (and leave the forum archive as read-only).

We'll be trialling a new Nabble forum dedicated to Grails plugins, but I was wondering whether the Grails mailing list archive could be merged into that forum at a later date. So the sequence of events would likely go:

1. Plugins forum is a success
2. We rename it and add a sub-forum for the core Grails stuff (what is currently user@grails.codehaus.org)
3. We close off the mailing list and add all the messages from the mailing list archive to the new sub-forum
4. All new messages go direct to the new Grails sub-forum.

Is that feasible?

Thanks,

Peter

Yes, that's possible. But will the mailing list die after that? Or will people continue to use it as always?
If the mailing list won't die, than I think we should continue to archive it separatedly. What do you think?

If we go with this approach, we will probably drop the mailing list at the point of transition. Whether we actually do so will depend on user feedback.

I think you can create the forum and promote it. Then we can postpone the decision about the mailing list until the forum takes off.
