How do I post a WMV - Windows Media Audio/Video file (.wmv) - in my site ?
Is this possible? I know how to put picks in there - but not sur about WMVs... Also know how to send WMVs in an email - but posting in a Nabble site is different I think... Thanks - keep up the good work.... Claude - http://loa-computer-help-plus.2634207.n2.nabble.com/ |
There are two possible approaches:
1. Simply upload the file using the MORE > UPLOAD FILE menu options. NOTE: It will appear as a link. Then your users will be able to download it and display it in whatever software they have to display such files. 2. Upload the file to YouTube and embed that in the usual way. NOTE: Uploading to YouTube converts it to a suitable format for display in a web browser. The fundamental problem is that WMV is a Microsoft proprietary format that is not supported by web browsers.

Hi Greg - I tried the "MORE" plan - it seemed to work just fine - But after I cleared my cache - And went to the link - It showed a whole lot of numbers and letters - nonsense to me.... Any ideas why it didn't play? I guess I can always upload it to my Hosting company and put it in a file and them post a link to my file on my Nabble site??? Thanks - Claude |
Oops! I should have pointed out that when I said "your users will be able to download it" that means they need to right-click the link and choose "Save file" (or whatever your browser calls that option.) If you do a left-click your browser will attempt to open it and, as I explained, the problem is that browsers can't handle the file directly. (I'm not sure why it appeared to work for you first time. Perhaps because you already had your WMV player open.)

Greg -
I think you are misunderstanding me - I just want the user/viewer to clink - right click - on the link and have it play.... Not interested in having the user/viewer saving the file I have solved the problem by goin around - http://claudemobetta.com/birds/miscstuff.html Thanks - Claude |
I understood that you just wanted your visitors to see the movie with a simple click but, as I said, WMV is not a format handled natively by any browser. Your solution doesn't work for me. When I open your page I see:
and there's no easy way to access the file without adding further software to my computer. I have the same problem when Mac users, and others, upload files designed to be viewed with Apple's Quicktime software - another proprietary format designed in the days before the web. I don't like adding software to accommodate proprietary formats when other more open formats are available. I would always encourage people to use such formats. I do have Flash installed on my computer, a format designed from the outset for web use, as do most people, and that's why I suggested uploading to YouTube as a more general solution, as YouTube does the necessary conversion of WMV to Flash and would allow far more people to see the movie. I accept that my alternative of providing a simple link to the file is a "lowest common denominator solution". It allows anyone direct access to file. allowing them to handle it in any way they choose, given the software available to them. I accept it's not "neat", but it is guaranteed as "universal".

You are most likely using Firefox or Chrome or some other Browser - Those bad boys always need somethin else to work and read HTML code - Why peeps use browsers other than Internet Explorer is beyond me.... Only IE reads html code exactly as written - and IE still has 95% of the browser users... ((OK - I know I will hear from that guy that hates IE)) So try it using IE - and let me know what ya got - Thanks - Claude |
Hi Claude,
I'm afraid you're just plain wrong. IE doesn't like WMV files any more than Firefox, Chrome, or any other browser. Here's your site in IE. It is you who have chosen, at some point in the past, to install the necessary add-on. Others will see nothing! You could say it's even worse than other browsers As for your comment that "Only IE reads html code exactly as written", that's just nonsense. You can only believe that if you live in a totally exclusive MS world. Try a search for "browser bugs". You'll find that IE is miles ahead in the list of problems when it comes to conformance with W3C standards. and "IE still has 95% of the browser users... " is equally dubious. I just googled for "browser usage statistics" and went to the top result: http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp a very well-respected site and according to it, IE hasn't been close to the figure you suggest since they started collecting the statistics 10 years ago - and it has been steadily falling throughout the entire decade - although I will concede that other sites will get different results. Forgive me for saying this but... I always have believed that AOL users are a breed apart cocooned in their own rather strange world. I think of them the way most people regard some of those rather quaint religious communities, that aren't quite living in the 21st century. Most of the time they do no harm to others, but they sure do have a strange perspective on the computing world.

Now you are getting somewhere - Click the "Go ahead and click on the Notice at the bottom \" It's your ActiveX setting that is messing ya up... Before I send out any new web sites - I have 5 email buddies that check the site to see what browsers work and which don't work. Withn this site all were able to see and play the site... I even had one lady say "posted" it played fine for her with "SeaMonkey" 'As for your comment that "Only IE reads html code exactly as written", that's just nonsense. You can only believe that if you live in a totally exclusive MS world. Try a search for "browser bugs".
