Our forum is currently showing a high number of registered users and anonymous users,currently -on-line

Usually I would expect too see 3 or 4 users at one time and anonymous about the same -a lot of those shown as being on-line have not posted anything for some time today.
We are a very small forum.
Is there a fault somewhere please?
