Hi --
I have a new issue to solve today. A user registered for my forums (I have two separate forums, each located on a different page with access "locked" by software called PayPal Member Script). Here's what he reported late yesterday: "I successfully registered for the Deal Makers Forum .... and received the confirmation email ... But (and you're not going to believe this) when it asked me to login, I forgot me PASSWORD, so I requested a new one. Here's what I got Name: Robert Mountin (my name is ROBERT SCHIMMEL) E-Mail: mountin@comcast.net (my e-mail is RSCHIMMEL@DIRECTFOCUSGROUP.COM. When I saw that, I immediately left the page ... tried again with the same result." The two forums I'm operating are: The Deal Makers Forum http://rain-maker-central-deal-maker-forum.7585.n6.nabble.com/ and The Profit Facilitators Forum http://rain-maker-central-profit-facilitator-forum.6406.n6.nabble.com Both are redirected to their respective locations on the membership pages. I have NO idea what is going on here or how to help this user...does anyone else know? Is it because I have two forums and some members can sign up for both? I didn't think the user name (email address) was now stored and used system- wide...maybe that's it? Thanks for any help. |
I can't answer or give reasons why the things that are going on are, but it appears to be more of a member script issue to me and is likely to need support from that quarter, e.g. is it designed to handle two separate memberships on a single domain? Have you got all script options set appropriately for that purpose?
However, I also wonder... If your forums are embedded on your site and each is hidden behind your PayPalMemberScript, (and it is indeed designed to handle multiple memberships under the same domain) then why use any registration requirement on your forums? Wouldn't it be simpler to keep the default "anyone" setting for the "View", "Create_topic" and "Reply" permissions, once they're logged in under the appropriate membership? (It's true you might need some Premium Support assistance to be able re-write the NAML code to remove the Captcha codes that are normally required by non-registered users.) Secondly, if you do expect that some people will use both forums AND you require registration on each, then it is generally better to have them as separate sub-forums of a third parent forum. That way the user only needs to register on the parent forum with a single username and password and you can then set permissions to to ensure that they only gain access to the appropriate sub-forum. (Although in your case, I'm not sure if there is a way of being able to automate changing of permissions based on membership defined externally of Nabble by that script of yours.)

Thanks for the quick response, Greg!
I don't think the member script should cause this problem as it only controls which page a member gets access to. The problem is that lower-level members get access to one forum and upper-level members (paying more) get both. The solution you suggested -- combining the two with sub-forums, is one I've been thinking of... The user did report back and confirm he did click the confirmation link in the email, but it now assumes he's the other user...Robert Mountain. Weirdness. I'll keep an eye out for other possible solutions to the issue...and keep mapping out combining the two forums into one to jump that direction. Alan R. Bechtold eMedia Mogules, LLC P.O. Another couple of questions regarding implementing the solutions you proposed:
Is there an EASY way to combine two Nabble forums into one? And -- if I turn off required registration for a forum, can people still register if they wish (and are able) and set up a profile, etc.? As you can tell -- I'm completely new to Nabble and figuring out how to do something kinda' complex...and most likely "over-complicating" things in the process ... but I learn FAST! |
You'd need to ask Nabble to migrate the existing forum to be a sub-forum on another. Because the new forum would have a new address it would mean some links within the forum would no longer work. Yes. The advantage, as I see it, is that they could get into the forum immediately without a confusion of different usernames and passwords all at the same time. While later, when they appreciate the additional facilities that registration on the forum, would bring they might also appreciate that the second username and password are not related to the first. We all have to start somewhere and combining two independent, and possibly interacting, systems of security all at once is bound to be tricky.

Greg --
EXCELLENT! Thanks very much for the helpful suggestions. I'm examining my options now as what you pointed out makes perfect sense, now that I am getting a tiny bit more familiar with Nabble and the particular application I'm putting it to. Really appreciate it. |

Earlier I said:
I should have said that you can institute such a migration yourself via the option: OPTIONS > STRUCTURE > CHANGE PARENT and paste in the URL of the new parent forum. Note that there are a number of implications to such a move, but these are spelt out on that page.

I used Changing Parent a while ago... It is really good, but very easy to delete stuff accidently. You must pay great attention to what you are doing, or take a backup copy beforehand... I never did get to do that!
