Mailing List

sendtodilip
Hi

I have created a Mailing List sub-forum in my main Forum. So while creating it asked me

1.  Mailing List Address
It should be my e-mail address

2.  Mailing List URL

What is actually a Mailing List URL? Nabble does not provide any document for this. As i am a new bee here i am not able to understand what should be the URL. While subscribing the forum it is asking the user the following:

IMPORTANT: This subscription is independent of the real mailing list subscription. Basically, you will subscribe to the forum archive, not to the mailing list itself. The archive subscription won't guarantee that your messages will be accepted by mailing list. If you want to subscribe to the mailing list instead, visit this page.

After some search i found a page. If i should crate a page like this then how can i?

3.  List Server and Version
I have given the default value.

4.  Subject Prefix
It's up to me..

I think i have cleared expressed my question. Please help me..

Thanks,

Dilip.

Re: Mailing List

Hugo <Nabble>
Do you want to create a mailing list or archive an external one?
I believe you want to create a mailing list and get people subscribed. Is this the case?

If you want to archive an external mailing list, then you should find its website. For example, this is the website of the Maven mailing lists: http://maven.apache.org/mail-lists.html

If you want to create a new mailing list, then you should just use our standard forums, which have a built-in mailing list. So people can subscribe to the forum and they will receive emails for every new message posted. If they reply to those emails, the message will be archived at the forum and all subscribers will be notified.

Thanks Hugo for an early response. You people are really working hard. But due to less documentation about Nabble and dumb users like me having troubles to understand the application. I am using the standard forum which has a built-in mailing list. But each time I post I am getting a mail saying your post is pending.  Should I ignore those e-mails because all the subscribers are getting the posts?

I have another doubt that can I archive the posts later having all the posts?

Thanks.

You probably set up a mailing list archive configuration, which is not what you want. We still have to add a button to let users remove such configuration, but for now, please post the link to your application and I will fix it for you.

What do you mean by "archive the posts"? You can download them to your computer if you want (Options > Download archives).

This post was updated on .
Thanks Hugo,

What I want to do is I request forum users to subscribe and post by e-mail to a sub-forum (i.e. draft). After that I will move the appropriate posts to another sub-forum (e-mail achieve). I think as of now this is the only way I can moderate the posts.

Here is my application:

Thanks.

I am getting "Subscribe" option in the "Draft" sub-forum. I only need "Post by E-mail" option there.
Please tell me how can i remove the option because with this option i can not moderate the posts

Thnks.

You can remove permission of registered members to post on your moderated subforum. Does that solve your problem?
Nabble staff. We never ask for passwords.

What type of permissions?

I just don't want the "Subscription" option there.  If some one will subscribe the posts then he will get the posts before i can move to the "E-mail Archive" sub-forum.

Re: Mailing List

Unless I am misunderstanding, I am beginning to think that Nabble applications are not suitable for your purpose.

As I understand it your "archive" forum is just a web page that contains posts on a topic which you have approved. You then want a mechanism that allows people to comment on these in such a way that no one else can see their contents until you have approved them. Wouldn't you be better off with a simple "formmail" script that sends everything to you privately so you can add it to your approved archive page?

The fundamental nature of a forum, or mail list, is to an allow open exchange of posts. You'll always be jumping through hoops if you don't trust your users to respect the purpose of your forum/mail list and follow the ground rules you set out.

The moderation tools that do exist within Nabble, as with any forum/mail list software, are designed to allow the administrator to give increasing levels of trust to particular users and handle the awkward occasional exceptions where, at each level, unknown, trusted or highly trusted users overstep the mark. You seem to want a system that trusts absolutely no one, ever. For that a "mail me privately" form is all you need - not a mail list.

Oh Man! I have created this Forum just one month ago. I know what a forum mean.As the Nabble Admin Said that this is the way i can moderate the posts. So i requested for the solution. This does not mean that i trusts no one. My other sub-forums are free to post any thing. This is a basic requirement and there are lots of topic about "how can we moderate the posts". This will help other members of Nabble too.

As I said, there may be a general misunderstanding here.

You want to set up a mail list, to which every message must be approved by you before being distributed to subscribers. You have been advised by Hugo and Peter that the only way to do this at present is to set up a sub-forum where people post their draft messages. They then expect you to move acceptable posts to the main forum, which they believe meets your full requirement. (They appear to ignore what happens on the "draft" forum on the basis that draft is non-official and no one need worry about what happens there.)

You respond, in effect, that postings to the draft forum do matter and will allow people to see the unacceptable posts that haven't been approved and moved to the main forum and ask how to stop that. You say:
This is a basic requirement and there are lots of topic about "how can we moderate the posts". This will help other members of Nabble too.
I could be wrong but I think there is a fundamental misunderstanding about what the term "moderation" implies. My understanding is that for the Nabble team moderation means the ability of an administrator to adjust posts AFTER they have been made. You are seeking something different. - a way to prevent posts being distributed unless approved.

I could be wrong but I don't believe that there is a way to do this using the current set of Nabble permissions. As I suggested earlier, Nabble's software is based on granting increasing levels of trust to different users NOT approval of individual posts. This is the conventional approach with forum software, though I accept, NOT with mail lists.

That is why I suggested that Nabble may not be right for you - and, incidentally and implicitly, is something that I believe Nabble do need to address if they are to promote their service as offering conventional mail list functionality, where moderation does mean approving individual posts before distribution to subscribers.

Re: Mailing List

Would a 'Report this post to admin' button (via email form) not be a good way towards self moderation of forums? E.G a way for users to 'flag' a problem post for admin?

I think this user wants an admin approval function where certain forums/subforms can be set to auto 'send for approval' mode, Ie Email is sent to admin, notifying of the topic awaiting approval , with a link back to an admin only visible section of the forum, where the admin can read collated 'waiting for approval' post before ticking yes/no to publish visibly where they were posted.

Many free forums have this option in settings, admins provide an email where alerts are sent.
