Harvey... Your instructions are really good... and as I flicked through them, I realised that I was using up your Ad Removal payment... Sorry! But it does go to show that you need to be aware of how things like that might mount up...
PS. Why haven't you used a photo of a snow scene in your heading?

Yikes! I forgot I was giving away my money. Thanks for being considerate. HUGO you owe me .01ยข ! Kidding. Sorta Re: heading - either I don't know how to do what I want or it isn't possible. I want the TEXT to be "dropped out" of any header image I use but I can't figure out how to do that. If I just use an image with text as part of the image, I'm not sure how that would affect the SEO.

Try using an image as background and writing the text over it.
Test <div style="background-image: url(http://www.public-domain-image.com/backgrounds/slides/jute-pattern-background.jpg); height: 200px; width: 400px; border: 1px solid black;text-align:center"> <p style="font-size:45px;font-weight:bold;">Test</p> </div>

Peter - what I'm after is both the forum title and description dropped out of the image.

Hi Peter,
Where have I gone wrong in my CSS? I use Firefox as my primary browser and use the technique you describe on a forum I assist on at: http://uk-hbbr-forum.967333.n3.nabble.com/ Under Firefox all works fine with the background image in the header. However, under Internet Explorer and Chrome the background image doesn't appear unless you are logged in. How can I make the image appear for all visitors? EDIT: Weird! I went back to the forum in IE after logging out and the background image in the header had appeared. Maybe IE is just slow loading the background image?

Greg, maybe IE was getting it from cache?
Harvey Title is a h1 element and description is a div. I'm not sure if you can do that by changing their styles. However they are both inside a td (id=forum-header) . I'm not sure but maybe you could set a background using javascript. Anyway, have you ever considered placing the title in your blog page (above the embedding code) and hiding it from the forum?

I think the cache may be involved, not for IE, but for Firefox. I now believe that I only thought the background image showed in Firefox because it is my primary browser and I rarely close it and normally only hibernate my computer, rather than shut down. So it does fetch the image from the cache. That's why, when I test in other browsers the background image fails to appear until after I log in. Do you see the background if you visit: http://uk-hbbr-forum.967333.n3.nabble.com/ Relevant parts of the CSS looks like this: body { background-color: rgb(155,195,213); } .nabble { background-color: transparent; } #forum-header { height: 229px; background-image: url(file/n2188060/headerbackground.jpg); background-repeat: no-repeat; } h1#forum-title { color: white; font-size: 2.5em; font-weight: lighter; } div#description-box { font-size: 1em; color: white; padding-right: 0px; }Apologies for the "topic drift".

Indeed it does not show up but I believe the link to the image is broken. Can you upload it again and change the CSS to point to the new one?

And post where it does not require to be logged in to view. ;-) Maybe that's the real problem.

just remembered how I got that image to display. It's at:
http://uk-hbbr-forum.967333.n3.nabble.com/template/file/n2188060/headerbackground.jpg Link not (entirely) broken (except by Nabble's system), I think. :-) I've just posted that URL into Chrome, a browser I only downloaded a week ago, and never knowingly loaded the forum into it. It immediately jumped me to a logion screen and insisted I needed to be a moderator. However, now it is in Chrome's cache and show me the image even when logged out. I think I have the root of the problem! I recall I uploaded the image in a message (on the grounds that it would then be on Nabble's servers) then used the URL seen when editing the message, to populate the CSS dialogue. I guess that the Forum Admin and I are the only one's with adequate permissions to see the message? Where/how do you recommend I upload the image so it is on Nabble's servers and accessible to all?

Make a post anywhere public, take the picture address from there and delete the post (the picture is not deleted).
Or you may upload it anywhere you want as long as it is public. Personally I would upload it to google docs and make it public to the web (sharing). This way it would be easy to get the address again in case you lose it.

Hi Peter,
The image is now on Photobucket so hopefully you can see it. :-)

Harvey... Your new heading photo looks really good...

Thanks. That's our "in season" header photo. Lots of ski sites use a winter picture all year round, but I like to mark the change of the season.
