Your idea is going to be tricky to implement because a short text-only title is a required part of Nabble's structure (It's used in the breadcrumbs menu and other places) so it is not necessarily going to be easy to replace with a graphic.
Bear in mind that placing important titles and descriptions within graphics can make your forum extremely difficult both for those who use screen readers to navigate the web and for those who turn off graphics when using expensive data connections charged by the megabyte. In some countries having an inaccessible site will break disability discrimination laws, so do be careful about exactly what you remove.
Probably the simplest alternative is to experiment with a different forum structure and use of the "Board" application. This will display full HTML descriptions. You could place your banners there. They'll be different macros that will need editing with that solution, so see if they work for you before attempting to edit anything.
