Fake Authors Using Quote

r3d
I recently noticed that since the quote button just adds some code to the post, you can actually make fake quotes by fake authors.
For example:

This is an example on how I can pretend to quote someone else or write a fake message. CrazyCow isn't even a user. It could be worse if I used a REAL user!
Is there a way to disable or stop this? I don't want people to imitate me or other users or create fake statements.

Maybe. The only thing is I want people to be able to quote others, just without getting to change the content or author of the quote. There is always "@NewbieUser: Hello" technique but I like the quote system better. I think I may just keep the quote button for now unless you have another idea. Thanks for the help though ;)

I think that is a wise decision. If it becomes necessary just point out to your users that the "quote" facility is just a way of highlighting text in a particular way. It can be used by anyone for any purpose. It certainly does not guarantee an accurate quote from an earlier post.

I suspect that you are more used to "top-posting" replies over the full text of earlier correspondence. The Nabble "quote" is more akin to inserted responses, where you are expected to quote only small snippets of an original post.

With that approach, it is expected that these will be edited to provide just enough text to put the reply in context. With such a system it is always possible to use quotes so limited that it can completely reverse the original author's meaning. Obviously, people used this approach will never assume a quote is anything other than the current author's work.

You are completely right. Thank you for all your help since now I know how to properly use quotes. If someone does abuse the system, aka typing fake messages, the moderators on my forum will punish them and that user's reputation will go down since he won't be as trustworthy anymore.
Thank you for your help! Because of you, I am keeping Nabble as my forum service since for a while I was thinking of switching but not anymore!
