Chrome, Safari and Firefox

Harvey
I always use Firefox. Today I was checking things in Safari and Chrome and I noticed that Firefox makes better use of the space by give more space for the topic title and moving over the LAST POST and REPLIES columns. Anyway to make Safari and Chrome display the way Firefox does?

Firefox:

Safari:

Chrome:

You are talking about where the lines break on the topics title column, right?
I'll have to take a look at it.

But surely the line breaking issues is totally dependant on the size of the window, any font size customisation, (My ancient eyes find many sites have text too small to read - especially when it is light grey on a white background, that I frequently hit CTRL-+ a few times to make them legible - and my browser then recalls that setting every time I visit the site, so I never need adjust it again) that this issue isn't worth trying to fix at the Nabble end.

Users will always adjust text and window size of web pages to suit their own needs, not to mention more fundamentally at the operating system level - it's why we do things on screens these days rather than getting out a magnifying glass to read small print on a printed page!

The white space between LAST POST and the VIEWS could be better used for the long titles people post.

Also been trying to figure out how to change "SUB FORUM" to "FORUM."

I did change it in what I thought was the correct spot in NAML but it had no effect.

Re: Chrome, Safari and Firefox

Peter <Nabble>
Subforum: view_standard › view_standard_page › standard_table_columns
This could be done with translation tag or you could just go there and replace the text since you won't translate it anyway.

Both your topics column and your last post column have fixed widths. I suppose that's why they are displaying this behavior. See them here:

view_standard › view_standard_page › standard_table_columns › topics_column
view_standard › view_standard_page › standard_table_columns › last_post_column

Can you understand how I got there navigating through NAML tags using the Macro Viewer?

I do see how you got there. I don't understand why different browsers allot different space  for the topics.

I'd like to have a situation where all browsers render a similar result.

This is almost impossible. Each browser has its own algorithm and there is a general agreement that browsers don't have to show the same page with exactly the same look.

Nothing we  can do to make more space for the topics?

Could we set a minimum width on the column?

Could you look at it on a PC in Internet Explorer and tell me how it looks?

You can do that for yourself at http://browsershots.org/

It forwards any URL you give it to your selection of a host of browsers running on a host of OS.

But you still can't guarantee the window size they'll choose to run it under, the font size the visitor has set on their machine or any of half a dozen other parameters that will affect how a page is rendered by a browser. As Hugo says, you are asking for the impossible.

I understand that browsers will always have minor differences.  This one seems significant, and one that could be addressed. I am asking for a column to be right justified with a small amount of padding. I'm no coder, but I think it's doable.

If it isn't possible that's fine.  Before you spend too much time, let me know what the options are, if there are any.

Re: Chrome, Safari and Firefox

I was thinking about removing the width constraints of those 2 columns OR setting just the minimum for them just to see how they behave. I guess if they could just adjust to better fit the content would be better. But I would really have to try and see what happens.

Re: Chrome, Safari and Firefox

Could be do something where we use a specific amount for all the columns except the topics column and give it all the rest of the space?

If widths are fixed, why is Firefox ignoring that?

Re: Chrome, Safari and Firefox

some scary results. Many browsers I never heard of could not render the embedded forum.

Also I didn't see any choice for Internet Explorer?
