Hi. Newbie questions on custom domains.
I have a custom domain for my google blog: www.nyskiblog.com Currently i'm hosting a nabble embeddable forum in a widget on one of my static pages: http://www.nyskiblog.com/p/harvey-road-forum.html I'm assuming that by doing it this was I am getting little SEO value out of the content generated. If I can host my forum on a custom domain... "I will have to change its DNS configuration and make it resolve to the Nabble server where your forum is located." Not sure what this means or how to do it. Also two other questions - would hosting my forum on my own domain be better for my sites SEO? My gut feeling is yes but would like to hear your input. Second question .... should I (can I?) do it on a static page? Or should it be a subdomain? If both are possible what are the pros and cons of each? Thank you/.

I think I am making progress understanding this. The screen shot below is my access within GoDaddy to my URL account.
I THINK I would enter my new subdomain into the Alias Name field. And then I would enter my actual Nabble URL in the Points to a host name URL? http://the-forum.932206.n3.nabble.com/ The thing is I really want my forum to appear in "my shell" like it does here: (domain removed) Can I do that with a custom sub domain? Basically I want my forum to look as it does above, but get the SEO value out of it.

If you want to have your forum available at "forum.nyskiblog.com", you should add a "A Record" (not CNAME) that points to the Nabble Server IP address (216.139.250.152).
A RECORD forum ==> 216.139.250.152 This change should be good for SEO because the domain name is probably one of the variables of the ranking algorithm (although I can't prove this). |
I will try to figure out how to do exactly what you are saying.
SEO wise - I understand that the URL "should" or "might" help with optimization. But ultimately is it fair to say that there is no way to get the content of the forum - the posts - associated with my site as far as the search engines are concerned?

One more question...
From an SEO standpoint, is the subdomain: forum.nyskiblog.com any better than what I am doing now: nyskiblog.com/p/forum ?

If the forum has links to your site, search engines should understand that they are related. But the URL is a better indicator. |
It just occurred to me that if the subdomain makes the forum searchable then it should be considered related to the site.
But I'm still wondering if the subdomain is better than embedding in the blogger static page. forum.nyskiblog.com vs nyskiblog.com/p/forum

The answer is yes, but search engines don't see your forum in "nyskiblog.com/p/forum". They see it in the nabble domain (http://the-forum.932206.n3.nabble.com/). Changing the forum domain name to - let's say - "forum.nyskiblog.com" is definitely a good improvement.

Thanks Hugo. I will make the move.
REALLY appreciate the responsiveness. So far superior than the other company that owns me (G).

OK I lied. More questions.
If I do the switch to subdomain - will the permalinks feature produce links with my own domain name? Will the embed code change and need to be reentered on my site?

Hugo -
Still more information. There is a REALLY smart guy with a blog for Google Bloggers. It' called Blogger Tips and Tricks and I highly recommend it: http://www.bloggertipsandtricks.com He has been trying to help me work out the subdomain issues. Here is very informative post creating Blogger subdomains when you have a blogger custom domain: http://www.bloggertipsandtricks.com/2010/02/create-sub-domain-with-custom-domain.html He has posed this question: If you look at my post on creating sub-domain you will see that when the sub-domain is a blog also hosted by Blogger, you don't do anything with A Record it points to Google and the Cname points to ghs.google.com. You will also see that for the sub-domain forum forum.yourblog.com while I add Arecord point to nabble 216.139.250.152 in addition to those pointing to Google/Blogger. Now when I create the sub-domain for forum I have to create a Cname pointing to forum.myblog.com What do I do with the other half of the Cname? do I leave it blank or does it go to ghs.google.com or to some Cname associated with Nabble or do I just ?

I have created a sub-domain
http://forum.mymalaysiareview.com Added A record and have gone to this Nabble forum http://my-malaysia-review-forum.948699.n3.nabble.com/ went to Option > Editor > Change domain name and have changed the above forum to http://forum.mymalaysiareview.com On trying to save, got this message: "Your domain name currently resolves to an IP address that doesn't belong to Nabble. Please follow the instructions (see link below) in order to update your DNS. If you have just updated your DNS, please wait 24 hours for the changes to take affect." Hopefully everything has been done correctly, however not sure if the domain name change had been saved properly. It would have been much more comforting if the above message includes "You changes have been saved......." |

Yes No. The first code should continue to work without problems. |

Thanks for the link. The A record should be enough. Are you forced to create such CNAME record? If yes, then maybe you should try both ideas and see what works. If you can't find a solution, then I can take a closer look. The problem is that I have never used blogger before. |

When I ping your "forum.mymalaysiareview.com" URL, I get this IP address: 74.125.47.121. This IP doesn't belong to Nabble. Maybe you could post a snapshot of your DNS configuration here so that I can take a look.

I tried ping forum.mymalaysiareview.com
and obtained 216.139.250.152 (BTW what is the easiest way to ping a website without the result disappearing after a few seconds, not enough to copy-paste them?) Here are the DNS Settings

Your DNS configuration seems to be working.
Have you tried changing the domain name to "forum.mymalaysiareview.com"? |
(Replying using Nabble account tied to test forum)
If you read my earlier response Jul 07, 2010; 06:11pm, you would have seen I have already done that, only thing is, the message given by Nabble did not give me the comfort of being assured that the change had been made. In any case, after sending this message, I will do it once more, I think it will be the fifth or sixth time |
OK I think the problem may be traced to this message:
" After saving your changes, your old URLs will continue to work and will automatically redirect to your custom domain URL. You will also receive an email with a link to revert this domain change." I missed that email part. However, I checked my inbox for guidetomalaysia (at} yahoo [dot) com including the spam folder Ah at last I received an email (actually 2 both with the same time stamp 3:42 AM However, although I was expecting an email with a link to activate the change, there is no such link. I don't know why I didn't receive any emails the previous attempts In any case, the redirection (is this called domain mapping?) is working probably and the forum can now be found at http://forum.mymalaysiareview.com/ |
