Calmav not working properly

New in Ubuntu and Clamav
Update clam to 0.97.6 with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.
Start Clamtk the window opens every entry has a V after few seconds it shades and GUI version 4.44 as ?    
What this means?

Terminal output

~$ freshclam
ERROR: Can't open /var/log/clamav/freshclam.log in append mode (check permissions!).
ERROR: Problem with internal logger (UpdateLogFile = /var/log/clamav/freshclam.log).

All the clamav that i had before gave this output and don’t know why
I download clamav-0.97.6.tar.gz and extract into desktop but don’t know how to install or if
I should install this instead the installed version. Please let me know how to do this.
