Banning a member

ClaudeMobetta
When a member is baned from a site - are they notified of the ban by Nabble or other?
Any way of keeping the banded persdon from changing the screen name and posting again?

I have found that  there is no notification received by email and no indication of the ban is displayed when logging in as a banned user. However, when that banned user attempts to post they are met with a screen that says:
===========================================
Unable to Post
Sorry, but the administrators have banned you. You can't post a message here, but you can post in other places.

Please contact Nabble Support if you need help.

No! As the warning says on the screen when you go to ban someone...
===========================================
 Remember that the banning action isn't efficient because the user can always come back with a different account.

Probably the best way to stop being plagued by banned users re-joining, is to raise the entry barrier to your forum.

Assuming you currently allow registered users to post, you would need to add all trusted users to the "Members" group and only allow that group to post. Then, when a "Registered" user attempts to post, they see a screen that says:
===========================================
 Authorized Users Only
Only authorized users can proceed in this area. You can use the form below to send a request to the administrators.

Access Request
Explain to the administrator(s) why you want to access this restricted area.
===========================================

You can then decide to grant "Member" status on the basis of the message sent by the new user. It is highly likely that you will get used to the kind of explanation that banned users submit and you will be control their access to the forum.

OK - how do I do that fer Members group only?
Then peeps can't post unless REGISTERED and a MEMBER - rite?

That's right! You can't stop them registering but you can control who becomes a Member.

The default permissions on Nabble will allow those in the "Anyone" group to post. I assume that you changed that a while ago by visiting Options > Users > Change Permissions and removed the check mark in the box under the "Anyone" column for the "Create-topic" and "Reply" permissions and added it to the "Registered" group.

What you need to do now to implement this is go to that screen and remove the marks from the "Registered" column and add them to the "Members" column.

After that those who are not in the "Members" group will see the screen:

===========================================
 Authorized Users Only
Only authorized users can proceed in this area. You can use the form below to send a request to the administrators.

Access Request
Explain to the administrator(s) why you want to access this restricted area.
===========================================

and you will get emails from Nabble forwarding their reason for wanting to post (or complaining that they can't post any more). The emails include a link to the user's Profile page. Visit that page and add them to the "Members" group and reply to the user explaining that they are now authorised to post in your forum.

Rather than wait for complaints from your trusted users I'd recommend that you visit the profile page of all your trusted users (Click on their avatar/username) and add them to the "Members" group before they try to post again. If you choose to go this way, it would also be a good idea to post and pin a topic that explains your new members-only regime, so people know what to expect.
