Hi,
I have a Nabble forum backed by a mailman mailing list. To forward emails to the mailing list, the sending user must be a member (which makes sense). To ensure that both Nabble and the mailing list have the same posts, I've required membership to be able to create topics as well as post to existing topics. This works. Now, I get an email being asked to accept everyone wanting to become a member. My mailing list automatically accept new members - is there a way for Nabble to automatically accept new members to my forum? Thanks, -Marius |
I think, from your description, that you may have set your Nabble archive to have only registered users post and reply to topics in the archive.
However, if you return your Nabble application to it's default setting, those in the "Anyone" group can post and reply to the Nabble archive - but, as you know, their post won't get forwarded to your mailman list without them subscribing there as well. As a post only appears on the Nabble archive, if it's posted by a subscribed user at mailman and has passed any moderation you impose that should meet your aim of keeping list and archive in sync.

Thanks for your answer :)
I'm still confused though: My wish is to have a bi-directional forum-mailman connection. To achieve this, I want to make sure that only members can post to the Nabble archive, since to become a member it also sends a mailing list registration. I think the only missing piece in my puzzle is to avoid having to manually moderate membership requests. Having a valid email address is the only membership criteria in my mailman list. Any ideas? Cheers, -Marius |
As Greg said, to post via Nabble interface the nabble user should be also a member at the mailman list.
My test forum.

I understand, and all this works. The only hard part is to become a member of the Nabble archive itself, since Nabble seems to require manual membership management.

You misunderstand and are complicating things by insisting that those using the Nabble archive become "members". This is NOT necessary. I say again, set the Nabble archive to allow "Anyone" to post. Remove the need to register for the Nabble archive. Now literally anyone will be able to post via Nabble, HOWEVER, and it's a big however - unless they are subscribers to your mailman list, anything they post will simply leave their computer, and go to your mailman software, where it will be held and NOT passed to the list because they are not subscribers. Now the second part comes into play... Nabble does NOT post directly messages posted at the archive. It merely forwards them to your mailman software. Nabble only publishes messages on its archive that passed through your mailman software and been sent to subscribers of your mailman list. You retain full moderation control. In this way Nabble achieves the bi-directional maillist-forum that you seek. While a non-subscriber to your list appear to be able to post a message through the Nabble site, if that user is not a subscriber to your mailman list it will tell them that their post is pending. It will remain pending until they become a subscriber.
