Attempting to restore from forum backup to a private PostgreSQL server

lunaprey
Hello!

I'm trying to decipher how to use a backup of the Nabble forum database and restore it to a personal PostgreSQL database. This is at the behest of the forum owner, to see if we can somehow archive old forum content separately from Nabble's own servers.

Through trial and error, I've managed to get a PostgreSQL server going and to successfully import the structure of the data. But not the data itself. For some reason, it seems the encoding on the data has gone wacky. Is this normal, or am I forgetting something?

I included images of what I mean by gone wacky - the first is an image of what it looks like in notepad, the other in notepad++. This is of the "view_count" table data file, which would be expected to have numbers (since this is of view counts..). It's worse in the others that is expected to contain text.

It seems as though the data has become corrupted, or is encoded differently. I've tried multiple encodings to no avail.

Attempting to import this odd data invokes errors of missing column fields - of course, since I couldn't identify any column fields in this soup to begin with.

Sooo, to reiterate -
a) is opening the table data file (it has no extension) supposed to result in this garble?

b) if not, how do I correct it?

c) if yes, then how do I use this garble to restore to a backup properly, column fields and all?

I tried using the jdbc tool mentioned when the forum backup is downloaded, but I don't quite see how it can read this garbled data to begin with.

Thanks in advance!
- Lunaprey.

Hi,

I just wanted to update you that our forums are going to end the trial period in less than 5 days. We have thousands of pages of content that will be lost. Please answer our question. The legacy of our users is counting on it!

If you did the backup we can restore it for you. Why is your site on trial period? Is it adult? If you buy credits it won't be blocked.

Our backup works, but you have to send us the file.
Although you won't use our software anymore, why did you want the backup for? Were you editing naml?

You mean you're database back up only works when your company uses it.

Typical capitalist. When I get some time, I need to remind myself to write a negative review on your companies practices of keeping data from the owner's of the communities you host.

P.S. We ended up just developing our own forums. http://luna.soulcreative.org/. We can do in a couple weeks what your company can't do in it's entire life-time, and what's more? Our database backup works with ALL SQL databases. You're backup doesn't even work with the database it's native too. No need to worry though, we plan on fixing your database back up, and integrating the old data into our new community. Good try though.

Hi, my name is Michelle Adams, and I had the misfortune of attempting to do business with this 'company'. The company owner (Luna) has stated they are 16, I've no reason to doubt this because the quality of work matches this. Luna's attitude's disgusting and unprofessional, her English is well below par, and the sites look terrible, they're not appealing at all.
The 'company' (soulcreative.org) claim that they know a lot about websites, and how to create them, I have been looking into the websites that they have created and they are nothing special, nor are they worth over $5000, let alone $250 a month. That is just a 100% rip off. You can get professional work done for a fraction of the price.
This is just one example of one of their 'professional websites' - http://hainanuniversity.com/schools/...guage-programs - leads straight to an error page. This is the finished version!
Luna has a really bad stench of youngness and immaturity as well as a propensity to attack in response to constructive criticism, rather than try to keep customers happy and loyal.
I would advise anyone who takes their business/website seriously to stay away from this 'company' unless they're feeling charitable with up to $5000.
