Any way for an ADMIN to change a users email address for them?

Coleen_Astalos
Occasionally we get messages like this from our users:

Hi.  My email address has changed and I no longer have access to my old one.  I can't ask for a password reminder because of the email change.  It asks for my old email address and the password I think is correct isn't working.
My login is xxx and password is xxxxxx.  However that password doesn't work when trying to login to the forum using my old email address.  Am I just an idiot and can't figure this out?? :). I just want to change my email from xxx to yyy.

I realize that we can just tell them to re-register with the new email address.  However, any posts they made with the old email address don't "transfer" over to the new email address.

Is there a way to add the capability for an administrator to be able to change an email address or password for a user?
Thanks,
Coleen

The standard way is: the user login with his email, this email address may exist or not, go to Edit personal information then Edit Email.

Why this can't be done?

She can't remember her password.  So she can't login.   Since she doesn't have access to her old email anymore, she can't use the option to retrieve her password either.  So I need to be able to either 1) Change her email address for her OR 2) Set a new password for her (which would allow her to be able to login and do the email change herself).

For this member, we just had her start a new account since she hadn't posted with her old.  But we do have an very large number computer illiterate folks and having the ability to customize their password for them and change their email address for them would be helpful.

First of all, I LOVE Nabble and thank Pedro for everything he's done for us.  While it has been quite a learning curve for my members (and some are still struggling), I think it's the best system out there that allows both email delivery of the actual forum post as well as nice forum version.  Plus there are lots of ways to customize it by the individual members and by the administrators.

However, the basic administrative capabilities need to be "upgraded" so that it's easier for administrators to manage their lists.  We've made quite a few customizations to our own site which has improved the features available for us as administrators.  However, there are still a few things that administrators should have the capability to assist their members with - changing Email addresses & resetting passwords are two of them.

Thanks for the consideration.

I think it is a little bit dangerous give this power to admins. Please, in the meantime, give the users' email address and I can change it manually.

RE: Any way for an ADMIN to change a users email address for them?

Coleen_Astalos

Why is it "dangerous" for an Admin to have this capability?  This is a standard administrative function for a mailing list.  Administrators should have the ability to assist their members with administrative functions such as changing emails and resetting passwords.

In my situation, where members are paying for my site (Nabble is only one portion of that), they EXPECT me to be able to help them with their email delivery.  So when I'm unable to do that, I look bad.

I wholeheartedly agree! One has to be able to trust that those with administrator rights can assist non-techie users with admin functions.

Currently, all we can say to those who forget their passwords is re-register - and that leads to even greater confusion for them as they then forget which is the current id and which password goes with which id.

RE: Any way for an ADMIN to change a users email address for them?

Email address change:
This issues an email to them for them to confirm the email address change.  When they click on the link in the email it takes them to Nabble to login - which they have to use their old email address/password to do.  While I understand this, most of my members do not.  Remember they're artists not computer folks.  It would be better if the admin feature could just change the email address directly.

Password change:
Doesn't work, it changed the password of the logged in profile (me), not the password of the selected user.

FYI, I'm leaving on vacation this evening and won't have email access for a week.  So if you need more testing and I don't respond, that's why.  I appreciate you working on this.

In this case we must create a whole new email change feature. Do you have an alternative idea? For example, advise them about what they should do.

Hi Pedro,

I've just noticed that, on one of my forums there is now an "Edit Profile" option on my users Profile screen. The link allows me to change a users email address and password.

I assume this is a system wide change that may have been around for a while.

I know documentation is not Nabble's strong point but it would be really useful if such important upgrades to the system were posted in the "Nabble Latest Features" area, instead of using it only for Hugo's once in a blue moon announcements.

RE: Edit User Profile - change password.

Coleen_Astalos
Sorry for the delay in getting back to the testing on this option for an administrator to change a users password.

Can the prompts under "Edit Profile" only show the change password options if they're a registered user?  (Otherwise they won't have a password set up yet - so changing it shouldn't do anything).

Thanks,
Coleen

Is there any way to just replace the email address in the system with the new email address?  One of the problems with the way it is currently set up is the unregistered member (ie. those members who are just subscribers and interact via email).  The unregistered member doesn't have a login/password to be able to login to Nabble.  So there isn't a way to change their email address and keep the posts that they've made in the past tied to the same account.

If we could just change the email address directly in the system with what we typed in, that would solve all the problems.

 Edit your list_current_groups macro like this:
<override_macro name="list_current_groups" requires="user">
    <!-- List the groups of the user-->
    <n.set_local_user.this_user />
    <div style="margin-top:.4em">
        <strong><t>Groups</t>:</strong>
        <n.local_user.groups.>
            <n.sort/>
            <n.loop.>
                <n.if.has_more_elements>
                    <then><n.current_group/>,&nbsp;</then>
                    <else><n.current_group/></else>
                </n.if.has_more_elements>
            </n.loop.>
        </n.local_user.groups.>
        <n.if.visitor.is_site_admin>
            <then>
                <div style="margin-top:.3em">
                    <img src="/images/user_group.png" align="absmiddle" width="18" height="16"/>
                    <a href="[n.local_user.change_user_groups_path/]"><t>Add / Remove Groups</t></a>
                    <n.if.is_registered>
                        <then> | <a href="[n.local_user.edit_profile_path/]"><t>Edit Profile</t></a></then>
                    </n.if.is_registered>
