Adminstrators and Back Up

ClaudeMobetta

Howdy -

1. I'm  thinking of adding two fellers to my LOA site as helpers/Administrators...
Have known these folks fer years - but if it didn’t work out - could I remove one or both if it didn’t work out.

2. Is it possible fer an appointed administrator to dump me?

3. Has any one used the “BACKUP” in >Options >Download Backup...
    Is it safe to use?

Thanks fer any Claude

As administrator you can remove that status for them at any time - but that assumes they don't remove your status as administrator first!

If you're not 100% certain of them, you should create an additional "Moderators" group and assign them to that. You can then can give them only the permissions you are happy for them to have.

I can't believe Nabble would provide something they didn't think was safe to use, but I haven't any experience to base a reply on.

Greg -

So what is the difference between Administraters and Moderator?
What can a moderator do on my site????

Basically what I want is for a couple of old email buddies from the UK -
To look at LOA  in their AM -
And if they see a out and out Advertisement - to delete the ad(s) -
They see the site 8/9 hours before I do,,,

Thanks ole Chap,,,

Administrators have the same complete power over the site as you.

"Moderators", or whatever you choose to call the group, the name itself is irrelevant, will be able to do just what you choose. You just need to set or remove the permissions as you see fit.

If you are not currently using the "Members" group (it's created by default but you need to assign people to it manually) then you could use that for this purpose.

Ah! That is slightly tricky.

As you may have noticed, the permissions screen has no specific checkbox to allow people to delete other people's posts - unless you are an Administrator, when it comes with the package.

However, there is a permission that you can give that allows people to MOVE a post. So if you don't want to allow those buddies to have ALL the powers you have, you could assign them to your chosen special group and give members of it that power.

You would also need to create a special sub-forum (Perhaps called "Private" or "Moderators Only") and remove the "View" permission for all users other than your special group and get your guys to move posts there.

Actually, this is the approach that I recommend, as it allows you to keep the evidence if you ever get into a debate with the user concerned and you can always move it back again if you decide a poor decision was made. Obviously you can't recover a deleted post, so it is a far safer method.

Greg -

OK - so are you saying is that a  Moderator can't delete a post ? Rite????
Only able to move a post - correct...
So if I made a bougus sub-forum like "Deleted Stuff"
Then later I could delete any in that Sub-Folder I wanted to - rite... ?.

(( any way to make a sub-forumk invisable to others))

Where would I start to set up Moderators... I guess start at Options....eh?

Lik 1 2 3 steps...

Thanks - Claude

True!

Yes! Only you (as an Administrator) and an author can delete a post. However, if the author no longer has access to his post then that leaves only you able to delete it.

Yes! There's two options.

The simplest is to remove the "View" permissions for those groups that you don't want to see the contents of the "Deleted Stuff" sub-forum (e.g. Anyone, Registered) and add the "View." permission for "Administrators" and "Moderators" (or whatever your special group is called).

This simple approach still leaves ordinary users able to see the sub-forum exists, but they'll get a screen with a request that they post a message giving reasons for wanting to access the area if they try to enter it.

However, with certain application types you can also use the facility at: Options > Application > Extras & Add-ons > Content > Smart application pages

Turn that on and it will be completely invisible to those groups that are not authorised to see the area, yet will appear as just another sub-forum for those that are allowed access. I know the facility works for the "Mixed" application (and your forum appears to be of that type), because I use it with "Mixed", but it doesn't seem to work for some others, e.g. the "Forum" application.
Where would I start to set up Moderators...
Options > Users > Manage users and Groups > Add new group

Just give it a name and add the addresses (in the form illustrated under the "more help" link) of the users you want in that group. (Note: you can't create an empty group so have at least one address ready to place in it when you try to save it.)

The next time you go to that screen your new group will be listed along with  the default groups of:  All Users, Registered Users, Administrators and Members.

Re: Adminstrators and Back Up

Hi Claude,

I took some back up files a while ago. I believe the system has been modified since then but I have never needed to restore from a backup so feel I can't report on how well the full cycle (backup and restore) works.
