Registered User vs Member

Coleen_Astalos
What is the difference between the two user groups - Registered User and Member?

I realize I can set different permissions between the two, but I need to know what makes someone a registered user versus what makes someone a member?

Thanks
Coleen

Registering is totally in the hands of the user. Anyone can register, by submitting an email address and confirming they have access to that address. No one can stop someone registering and once registered that user cannot de-register or be de-registered by anyone else.

Membership requires manual intervention by the forum administrator. An administrator can add or remove people from the "Members" group.

The difference in access to the forum depends entirely on the Permissions granted to those two groups.

Hi Greg,

Can a person who is not an administrator see all the registered users? This list of course includes people who were not approved to go into the Members list.

That depends what you mean by "see" and what you mean by "members".

Only those in the "Administrators" group will be able to see a user's email address on the User Profile screen.

Some think of those is the "Registered" group as "Members", but that term is used by Nabble as an additional class of user, on top of "Anyone", "Administrator" and "Registered", which you can opt to use, and, of course you can add your own groups to the default set provided by Nabble.

There is a permission "Show_group_members" through which you can add or remove various groups made visible on the "People" link on each forum and sub-forum. That reveals to users which usernames are in which groups - providing you have not removed that permission.

I always recommend that administrators set up a second user account which they can then use to test  the facilities available to those in the various user group used or added to a forum, because with come combinations of permissions and various levels of sub-forum things can get quite complicated.

Greg,
Just following up on 'deleting' users. Can this be done.... I've seen some requests on here asking to do this. I'm brand new to Nabble and so far enjoying the experience, but  have a user who is registered, even an administrator and has been added to the Members group, yet cannot login. Is there a way of a. resetting his login details, and or b. deleting that user and have him start the registration process again.
thanks
Gareth

No! Once a user has registered they will always be registered (unless you get Nabble to play with the database, but that is rarely appropriate and often pointless. For example, You can't ban a member unless they are registered. Had you removed them as a registered user, they could just register again, as registration is entirely in the hands of the user, not the Administrator.)

I believe Nabble can adjust a forum's user database however, before attempting either a) or b) it would be best to investigate exactly why your user can't login.

Can you confirm that they appear in the list showing users in the "Anyone" group?
Can you confirm that they appear in the list showing users in the "Registered" group?

If they appear in both, can the user be sure they are using the correct email address and password to login?
(You can see if the are using the correct email address, but the password is their secret and neither you nore Nabble can reset that.)
What message is displayed when the user attempts to login?

If not, has the user clicked the link in the email Nabble would have sent them on registration?

They'll be more questions depending on your answers...

Greg, thanks for the quick reply. I asked him to reset his password - he has an extremely long one at that!, and went through the confirmation stages etc, and now is all fine.

appreciate the prompt response.
cheers
