Can nabble show me which messages I have already read, based on my login not on my browser history? Common in other forums.
|
You are not the first person to request this feature. I remember some users wanted this feature because they used two or more computers and their browser history isn't shared. So they get confused when they switch computers. Is this your case?
|
I think it may be an objection in principle to this way of
using the browser cache, here is a members response:
"But that only applies within the memory of your browser's cache, it will 'forget' what you have read in many cases:- If you clear the cache (many people do this every time they log out, for security). If you use a different browser, less likely but possible. If you use a different computer - very likely. If/when the browser simply runs out of cache space and/or decides it's time to 'forget'."

I guess we will be able to implement this in a few months, after we release templates. This will have to stay low priority for the next months, but will not be forgotten. I will let you know when we are ready to work on this.

Hi Hugo we have closed the black sea forum we had, can we keep the archives
though? Best wishes David |
Hi David, yes, the archives can be kept. But where is this forum now?

Sorry to mail the lot of you, not sure who knows about this issue, Hugo and
Will have both looked at it in the past. The threading by meta data problem, fixed below in 2007, has returned with Nabble 2. See just above http://n4.nabble.com/DBAc-Rivers-Lot-and-Baise-td584994i20.html#a621478 just above that post the subject changes completely within the thread. It changes from "DBAc: Rivers Lot and Baise " to "DBAc: ICCs - an update " Members are replying to an email, changing the subject and sending it, it then gets threaded in the original subject . Is there some way we can resurrect the fix you implemented below so it is ongoing not just for archive data transfer? Thanks David > -----Original Message----- > From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On > Behalf Of Nabble Support > Sent: 15 October 2007 22:29 > To: David Beaumont > Subject: Re: thread by subject not metadata please > > This is done now. You are right, David. We will put this code back and have it working just like the old Nabble. I will let you know when this is already working.

Hi David, this should be fixed now.

In addition to the issue below I'm told that if a topic is started in
Nabble2 and someone replies by email then the reply is not threaded with the original. This is a serious problem. Not noticed it before in Nabble1 so I assume it is new. Please can you let me know you are receiving these emails. Here is an example:
"The most recent example is with the subject Bank Account in France on Main Nabble Forum http://n4.nabble.com/DBA-The-Barge-Association-main-list-f222579.html. The single subject is fragmented into 5 different threads. When I noticed this yesterday, these five threads had a total of 6 postings - the only Reply that was correctly threaded was Bob Marsland's one. There are a few more replies now, but of course the sequence is already upset. Quite a few of our users are complaining about this, below is another one
that may help you identify the problem. Best wishes David "E-Mail is threaded by checking the References: header in the message, this has the Message-ID: of messages which 'higher up' in the thread and the mail client program uses this to show the thread. Some mail clients can also be told to thread by matching the Subject: with previous messages but this is obviously less reliable (and won't get the order or branching correct). Newsreaders use the same information in the headers, i.e. the References: header, to thread messages. Looking at the "steering wheels" thread in the Main list it's obvious that something (presumably Nabble) is screwing things up. Looking at the first message in the thread I see:- Message-ID: <[hidden email]> [no references as it's the first in the thread] Message-ID: <[hidden email]> References: <[hidden email]><[hidden email] e.com> <[hidden email]> ... and all subsequent messages have a mailman Message-ID: and references to Nabble. So, essentially, as far as I can see Nabble hijacks the references and puts its own references there which breaks eveything for both E-Mail and newsgroup subscribers. Given that *most* people still use the lists by E-Mail this seems rather a bad thing! ... and complaining that E-Mail users are hi-jacking threads etc. is a bit much too since the threading is completely broken by Nabble anyway." > -----Original Message----- > From: David Beaumont [mailto:[hidden email]] > Sent: 18 November 2009 12:35 > To: 'Nabble Support'; '[hidden email]'; 'Hugo <Nabble> [via > Nabble Support]' > Subject: RE: thread by subject not metadata please > > Here is an example: > > "The most recent example is with the subject Bank Account in > France on Main > Nabble Forum > http://n4.nabble.com/DBA-The-Barge-Association-main-list-f2225 > 79.html. Hi David, this happens because your mailing list archive is configured to create threads by subject. If you look at the "Bank Account in France" topic, it doesn't have the "DBAm:" text in the subject. This is also true for the reply by Bob Marsland. Those emails that were not archived correctly have that text in the subject and thus represent a new topic. I know the the "DBAm:" text is the mailing list prefix, but it comes in a non-standard format (standard format should be [DBAm] -- standard format is handled by our code). I will talk to the team and look for solutions.

hi David, I want to configure your forum archive to automatically remove the "DBAm:" text from all subjects. This will solve the threading problem and will also make the topics cleaner. What do you think? Would this be a problem for you and your colleagues? Please let me know.

Hi David, the first message in that "steering wheel" thread was sent from Nabble, so it is correct to have @n4.nabble.com messageIds. It is mailman that is replacing our MessageIDs with mailman IDs and this will break the threading if somebody replies to a message that was sent from Nabble, received by mailman and forwarded to subscribers with a different ID. Then replies to this message will not thread correctly because they will have the mailman ID in the References. So please check if mailman has a specific configuration to fix this problem.
Please don't forget to give me your decision about this issue: http://n2.nabble.com/fetaure-request-idetnify-read-messages-by-login-tp3892459p4027287.html Regards, Hugo Teixeira Nabble.com |

Hi Will , Hugo, any news on this one? It is a serious problem - replying
to a post which has originated on the forum by e-mail creates another thread. Hi David, I'm waiting for your answer on this:
http://n2.nabble.com/fetaure-request-idetnify-read-messages-by-login-tp3892459p4027287.html I want to remove the "DBAm:" prefix from the message subjects (so that threading by subject doesn't break anymore). Is that ok? |

Thanks Hugo Sorry I had missed this query. Yes removing the [DBAm:] or [DBAc:] prefix would be very difficult for us, our members rely on it to identify that it is from a list and which one and often use rules in their mail software to send it to the appropriate folder.
Are you saying we cannot have prefixes at all or just that we need to amend the format? Thanks David |
The prefix would be removed only in the archived messages (i.e., emails would still have the prefix). Is that ok?

I keep reading this and am still unsure what is meant
Do you mean [DBAm] would be fine, it is just the : that is the problem? If so is it not possible to handle the :? When you say you want to remove the DBAm: do you mean from just all the nabble held archives? Will it affect new posts sent by email and will it solve the current split thread problem or willl it just tidy the archives? Wil posts created on the forum arrive in our mail boxes with DBAm: added? Will posts sent by email arrive on the nabble archiove with DBAm removed? Will replies to existing posts by a different method to the original post be Ok? Thanks David |
