Turn off users "reply by email" function

donharrison
Not sure why we needed that function?
After all in doing such they are not visiting the site, not participating within the forum, and its formatting looks messy once they have replied this way.
Can this "function" be reset to simply lead the User back to the relevant post - On The Web Site - where they can log in and reply or can Admin/Owners have a switch to turn off users "reply by email" function, if they don't want it on there sites?

cheers Don.

There is no "reply by email" function within Nabble.

There is a "Send Mail" function, which allows you to contact a user privately.

There is a "Subscribe" function because many Administrators want to use Nabble's service as an archive for a mail list or wish to allow their users the flexibility to communicate in the way that suits them best.
After all in doing such they are not visiting the site, not participating within the forum,
If you're running a mail list, then without the archive that Nabble provides, there is no way to view posts made before you subscribed. As an archive, the site is only of use for historical research and there's no need for the normal subscriber to visit the site.

A subscriber typically receives (and reads?) every post made anywhere in a forum including all sub-forums. A forum visitor may only explore a few areas. Why do you suggest a subscriber is "not participating"?
and its formatting looks messy once they have replied this way.
Whether it looks messy is entirely down to the software and practice of email users, and depends on whether they use HTML or Plain text mail programs and whether they insert responses or top-post replies. You can create house rules to control that, or you can switch on the facility to edit the posts of top-posters to remove all their duplicate rubbish.

You may remove the option to subscribe, but often it is the subscribers who see new topics first (How many times a day will a forum user visit a site? How often does your mail arrive?) and are the ones who respond first and keep your forum active.

If you don't want subscribers, you could edit the NAML in your forum so that it only offers notifications of new posts.

Re: Turn off users "reply by email" function

Hi Greg,
Sorry here's what l mean:

http://www.fishingwesternport.com/WHITING-ROD-td4038473.html#a4038601

Page down and you will see that (in this case) a User (profishing - as an example) joins up and replies to a post then hits "Alert me by email when someone posts to this thread"
So each time an email comes in, alerting him of a reply, he just replies to the email and it posts on the site without having to visit the site/log in etc.
I would prefer if the email alert, simply gave him a link to the post on the Web Site, where he can then log in and reply.

So Alert is OK - but having a reply posted via that email Alert is a problem.

So l want to disable this "reply by email option" the one that says:

"If you reply to this email, your message will be added to the discussion below:
http://www.fishingwesternport.com/WHITING-ROD-tp4038473p4038584.html" etc.

Can you tell how to do disable this?

thanks in advance.
cheers Don.

Hi Don,

Yes I do recognise what you mean. Clearly "profishing" is subscribed and replying using his email program. Whether he's subscribed just to the topic "WHITING ROD" or to all topics within "Gear & Tackle" or all topics within "fishingwesternport" and any of its sub-forums, I can't tell.
So l want to disable this "reply by email option" the one that says:

"If you reply to this email, your message will be added to the discussion below:
http://www.fishingwesternport.com/WHITING-ROD-tp4038473p4038584.html" etc.

You can't. It's impossible! Once anyone receives an email it's out of both a Forum Administrator's and Nabble's control. Emails are, by nature, things you are expected to reply to. Just removing the text in the footer of an email isn't going to stop someone replying to that email.

What is technically possible is for Nabble to refuse to accept emails for processing and assigning to a forum. I can't imagine Nabble ever wanting to stop that process as it is a required feature of a significant proportion of all Nabble's users. Further, I don't believe that it will be possible within NAML code for an individual forum administrator to prevent a mail from being posted to a forum as I believe that process is done globally and can't be switched off at the individual forum level.

More feasible is re-writing the NAML for your forum so that rather sending out the full text of subscribed posts, it just sends a notification that a post has been made. While that wouldn't prevent someone replying, it would make it pretty pointless as they wouldn't know what was said. However, I certainly don't have the NAML skills to do that.

Much easier, will be to delete, or comment out, the NAML code that inserts all the options that allow you to subscribe to a forum, sub-forum, topic or post, then a user will not see those options and they'll never get those emails in the first place. Again, I am not confident that I have the skills to find all the right segments of code to suggest that should be removed.

I do have considerable sympathy with your predicament, as "profishing" is not only leaving in the full quote of every post he replies to - something that not necessary to see in a forum - but is also sending his mail in a colour and font and font size that probably looks acceptable to him, but takes no account of of the colour scheme of your forum and I, for one, find his messages very difficult to read.

So, until someone comes along and suggests how to achieve what you want, you have two options...

Approach your user and point out to him the problems his posts create for users of your forum. Suggest that he visits the forum and sees what his posts look like and how out of keeping they are with all other posts. Make these specific requests:

• That he always deletes any quoted text before he hits his send button. (This should get rid of the unwanted text.)

• That he sets his email program to send "Plain Text" replies to any email receives from your forum. (Decent programs should have this feature and it should get rid of his fancy fonts and colour scheme that make his messages so difficult to read and force his posts to reflect your forum's styling.)

If that approach doesn't work then you are forced either to remove his subscription (Options > Users > Manage subscriptions: You need to check through all levels in your forum to find where a users has subscriptions set) but that is likely to both annoy him and making him much less active in your forum or edit his posts as they arrive. To do this go to the top level of your forum and go to:

Options > Users > Change permissions

and check the Administrator only, "Edit_all" permission. That will give you an "Edit post" item on the "More" menu of any user's post, not just your own. You will then be able to remove any quote. In addition, because that facility only presents you with the text of a post, any edit you make will also remove all of the author's fancy formatting. I recognise this is a last resort solution as it places a management burden on you to keep your forum looking pretty.
