Spam moderation

Getting lots of spam lately. Is there a feature whereby I might moderate comments-- i.e., review them before publishing. My concern is that the spam goes out to all subscribers before I am aware that it has been posted.

Unfortunately, there is no system within Nabble for approving individual posts. You can only approve users and grant them the access rights you deem appropriate.

As access to the "Anyone" group is unrestricted and supplying an email address to join the "Registered" group cannot be prevented by the administrator, although there is an option to receive an email when someone registers. See:

Options > Application > Extras & add-ons > Email & notifications > Notify me when someone registers

the only option you have is to implement a membership system. Nabble includes a default group "Members", access to which is  controlled by the administrator who must add/remove users from that group manually. That is the best option available.

Thanks, Greg. I am not familiar with the "Member" category. Can I designate members now or must they do this upon logging in?  The former method would be less intrusive as I know many of the registered users and could save some disruption if I could designate them as Members before pulling the plug on all the others. Right now I notice there are no Member among the four pages of registered users.

Where is the info om the procedure for becoming a member? I see the choice: "Which groups allow members to be listed" and I can do this as Administrator but how?

Well, I answered my own question and found it is easy for me to add selected users (Register, Unregistered and Subscribers) to a new category that I named "MEMBERS." That way the established posters and commenters may continue posting as if nothing has changed.

I hope I can spot any spammers who request MEMBER status. Will I have any information about them besides their e-mail, which may be spoofed?

Hi Ken,

I don't quite recognise what you describe. I think you may be doing the wrong thing.

Log in as an Administrator and you should then have the menu option trail:

Options > Users > Manage Users & Groups

On that screen you will see four default groups: "All Users" (aka "Anyone"), "Registered" "Administrators" and "Members". You also have the ability to add others.

If you click the "All Users" link you will find names of anyone who has recorded an address on your forum. The "Registered" list is similar but, for example, removes "Banned" users from the list. Other than by banning  the forum administrator has no control over who appears in these groups.

The "Members" group will be empty by default, but this screen does allow you to add and remove users and save the changes. To make proper use of the group you then have to go to the link seen on that screen or via:

Options > Users > Change permissions

and, on the "Change Permissions" screen remove the check mark in the columns "Anyone" and "Registered" against the "Create_topic" and "Reply" permissions and add one to the "Members" column (and save the changes).

Now only trusted users, ones in the members group can post via the forum.

Greg. I did everything except changing the permissions. Glad you pointed this out to me.

Now all my trusted users, whether "Registered" and/or "Subscribers" have been copied to the "Members" group, and I changed the permissions to "Members" and "Administrators" only, for posting and commenting.

Now I have two more forums where I must do the same thing-- the spam was hot and heavy today.

Today we released a new solution to block the current spammer. Hopefully this will stop him from doing more damage.
