Spam detector too zealous?

John Yeoman
While I am truly grateful for the protection Nabble offers me against spammers, I should point out a problem. When I tried to make an innocuous post in my own forum today - on sources of cheap vegetable seeds - the post was disallowed because I had used the term 'cheap' too often. This word may be the clue to a spammer but surely, in my own forum, I should be allowed to use whatever words I wish?

I can see problems for medical practitioners who might wish to discuss breast cancer but have to substitute the term 'mammary' for 'breast' to avoid upsetting the spam filter. Can Nabble give the moderators some discretion in the use of 'spam' words, at least in their own posts?

(Hm... I wonder if I will even be allowed to post this. I have used 'breast' three times!)

I adjusted the spam detector to be less severe with the word 'cheap'.

This is not so simple because spammers create tons of forums at Nabble and fill them up with junk. So we cannot skip moderators because they are also moderators/owners. So we need efficient methods to stop those bad guys and protect the system. Please just let me know if you have more issues with the spam detector (you shouldn't) and I will adjust it again.

Thanks, Hugo, as always. In fact, it was no issue. I simply changed 'cheap' to 'inexpensive', 'low cost' and 'good value' :) But it might be an issue for the classified ads forum I plan to offer my members at one site.

Thanks again, Hugo. In fact, I'm still having probems with 'cheap': more than three usages triggers the filter. Worse, the term 'drugs' is now giving me problems. I just posted a very scholarly article on avian flu and had to change 'drug' companies to 'pharmaceutical' companies throughout. But don't bother to adjust it: I'm having great fun, renewing my acquaintance with Roget's Thesaurus

You are funny, Nigel. Sorry again for the trouble. I made more adjustments and this shouldn't bother you again.

No, it's a squirrel hiding nuts in the motherboard. (This happens more often than people think...)

Darn it, I can't make a post now using the term 'handbag' more than twice. The spam detector has a grudge against h@ndbags, it seems. Viz:

[Spam Detector] Invalid spam message with too many 'handbag' words

Heaven help me if I was licitly marketing cheap handb*gs for the portation of viagra and other prescription drugs used by top Internet marketers. The spam filter would go viral... (Pl don't fix this bug. I quite enjoy inventing variations on 'ha**bag'.)
