Spam control, signatures and links

Harvey
You guys had set it up so that I could had to give permission for people to have linked signatures.

Could you extend this to all links not just in signatures?

Would be ideal to have it as two separate permissions but if it was a lot easier you could just expand the existing permission.

Actually it might make sense to combine them into one permission. Would like to hear your opinion on that.

I don't know.
A signature is something personal, it is related to the user, not the post.
While posting a link is extremely useful (in fact I can hardly imagine a forum where people cant post links), having links on signatures may allow users to use it to abuse it. Signatures are not contextual so people can write pretty much anything they want there.

Sounds like you are advocating keeping them separate.

I'm not talking about having a forum without links. Just that it takes a conscious effort by the admin to activate it for a new user.

Yes, I am advocating to keep them separate. I also think it should be enabled for all users by default. I can't imagine myself using a forum where I can't post links. It's part of the web experience. How would content on the internet be shared?

The granting would be done once I'm sure someone is not a spammer.  If someone posted a link without links enabled ideally it would just display the anchor text.

The odds of some posting some legitimate stuff to later become a spammer is pretty slim, but I'd still have recourse for that too.

OK, I'm checking to see the best way to do it.

Re: Spam control, signatures and links

Here's an example from last night.

This was the email notification I got overnight:

Notice that the original posting included a signature that I'm sure was an attempt at a link.

Here is the post I see this morning:

Note that the signature is gone, and the spammy link is in the body of the post.

I do think this is best done with two separate permissions.

I just looked at the code and the solution should be similar to the one you have with signatures. In other words, you will have a new user group (e.g., linkers) and people in this group will be allowed to posts links. If the user is not in this group, then link tags will be removed, but the anchor text will be preserved. Is this what you want?

Yes that would be perfect.

When I apply this change, all links will be removed from all posts (except if the author is in the "Linkers" group). So maybe you should first build that user group and – when you are done – you just let me know so that I can apply the changes.

Hugo  -  it will be pretty simple to just copy all 225 users into the new group.  So just let me know when the group is done and I will paste the list in.  As long as I am near my computer, the forum should only be without links for a moment.

To save space on the permissions pages lets just call the new group:

I am working on your core NAML files, so those changes will also apply to your magazine. So you will have to create a "Links" group there as well. Is this a problem?

Re: Spam control, signatures and links

I'm not sure.

It would be easy enough to add the authors to the list, but commenters would be a problem.

We've found that for us it works much better on the magazine to allow unregistered users comment.  There would be no way to enable comments there I'm guessing.

Is it more difficult or does it require more code to do this for just the forum?

It is fairly easy to keep this feature just for the forum, so I can do this. Please confirm.

Re: Spam control, signatures and links

Lets just do the forum. Fair to assume that if we see the need for the magazine we could add it later without much extra work?

Yes, that should be quite easy.

This is released now. Please create a user group called "Links" and move people in there. Note that pages in the cache will not be changed immediately. I can clear the cache of your forum when you are done.
