Search on Embedded site

Coleen_Astalos
I thought I read somewhere ( but can't find it now), how to set up a search on my site so that in addition to searching my site pages, it will also search the data in nabble (which is imbedded on my site, but the data is actually on the nabble site).

Can you point me to where I can find that information?
Thanks,
Coleen

That may have been a post of mine!

As your site is behind a login/password system you can't expect Goggle and other search engines to trawl it by itself, so you'll need to use a specialist tool. Many favour Google's Custom Search. I prefer http://atomz.com/ . It has these features (amongst others):

• You can customise its appearance to integrate well with your site
• You can set up multiple entry points for the spider (e.g. Nabble and your main site).
• You can initiate a full spider of your site at any time and control automated spidering

The reason I abandoned Google Custom search was that I could find no way to initiate a full crawl of my site and keep its index up to date after a major site overhaul (particularly relevant for the software manual on my nPOPuk site) and Google seemed to take weeks to complete a full crawl of my site.

See a couple of examples in action at:

http://www.seahawk17.plus.com/index.htm (Try a search for "hull")
http://npopuk.org.uk/3.01/index.html (Try a search for "ssl")

(Note how the search results pages show an Atomz URL in the address bar but due to the ability to wrap the results in a template that matches your site most users would never notice. - I really must address the styling issue on the nPOPuk site so the URL lines follow convention and show in green!)

Afterthought...

Actually, you may have a problem, even with Atomz, given that your site is fully behind a login screen and therefore, inaccessible to a search engine spider, especially if you redirect your Nabble forum.

Re: Search on Embedded site

This post was updated on .
I guess what I was thinking of was something that I could put on my own site that would search my site data.  I have 3 main programs that we use:
1) Articles (Knowledge Builder)
2) Nabble Forum
3) Photopost Gallery

Each of these has their own "search" function.   Currently my members know to use the search function on the main page to search the articles and then use the separate search in the photopost gallery if looking for photos.

So, I was hoping to have something that would allow a user to put in their search criteria on the main page and have it return the results of the articles AND the nabble forum results.  Since Nabble is embedded, it's not apparent to them that they'd have to do a separate search there.  So kind of hoping to combine those two searches.

Alternately, I guess another option would be to set up a search screen that allows them to put in their search criteria, indicate the areas they want to search and then it return the search results for all 3 (maybe in sections).  That sounds like more of a programming job than I can handle.
