Same name appearing against email from git@git.apache.org

chinmay
Hi,

I'm from Apache Apex Develepers forum: http://apache-apex-developers-list.78491.x6.nabble.com/

I've recently created this forum in nabble for mailing list dev@apex.incubator.apache.org

The mailing list has github messages as well which has "from" as single email address by different names.
For eg. name1 <git@git.apache.org>
name2 <git@git.apache.org>
etc...

It seems that all the messages from git@git.apache.org are appearing against single name.
All the mails are named from git@git.apache.org against bhupeshchawda.. But they're really named against different folks.

Can you please help us out in correcting this?
Is there any setting which I can change for names to appear as per the actual mail?

Thanks,
Chinmay.

Hi,

Unfortunately, there is no setting for changing names of email recipient. It is an issue I don't recall ever being raised before. You need to be aware that, fundamentally, Nabble offers a forum and many of the assumptions in its code are based on forum conventions rather than those of a mail list. Foremost of these are that any user has an personal email address, not one that is used by a number of users.

(I'm still trying to work out why Nabble has associated the github address with the forum user bhupeshchawda. My first thought was that this was the first github user whose post appeared on the archive, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Can you identify why that might be? It might help Nabble resolve this issue.)

In terms of mechanics, Nabble creates a mail list archive by subscribing to a mail list. Each post it receives through its subscription is then posted on the forum set up to receive them. (That creates issues for those who wish to use Nabble's archive as a medium through which to post, as they will almost always be required to be a subscriber to the list itself but simply registering at the forum/archive doesn't achieve that. Luckily, that doesn't appear to be an issue here - yet!)

I see further potential issues for you, given the nature of the emails received. One assumption built into Nabble is that a changed Subject Line in an email implies a new topic. (It ignores email headers that suggest a message is a reply.) I see that emails with the [jira] identifier often come with a host of further identifiers, including [created], [commented], [updated], [comment Edited], [Resolved], etc. As someone who doesn't understand quite how things work on a list such as yours, it would appear the threading of [jira] messages is utterly broken and may render some important aspects of an archive broken too.

As a result I don't think all the issues I see with your mail list archive will be solvable without a fair amount of custom coding and this would probably require paying for "Premium Support" as I suspect some functionality is not created through Nabble's NAML language and so not editable by ordinary users.
