Nabble posts not being delivered to java.net mailing list

Mike Wilson
We have some problems with our DWR mailing list at
http://dwr.2114559.n2.nabble.com/DWR-Users-f2114559.html

Since somewhere between April 19 and 23 posts made on Nabble fails to reach the mailing list at java.net. Mailing directly to the list address works fine.
Below is the bounce mail I got from Nabble when trying to post through Nabble a few minutes ago.

Can you help us correct this?

Best regards
Mike Wilson

Hi Mike, are you the mailing list owner? Can you please check if there is anything on your side that could affect this delivery? This is really strange. Please let us know if you have any extra information to provide.

Re: Nabble posts not being delivered to java.net mailing list

Mike Wilson
I'm the mailing list owner but the lists are hosted on Oracle's java.net project site and I have no admin rights to inspect anything there. My same hotmail address that successfully posts to the list when sending directly to it, fails when sending through Nabble.

Can you see what is happening on your end, what error replies you get from the java.net Sympa server, etc?
If there is some hard data to show, I can report the issue to java.net.

If it helps, I can make another post to the list if you want to do some extra logging or such?

Best regards
Mike

You are using Exim for mail delivery and the net seems to be full of incidents with the same error message:
https://www.google.com/search?q=%22retry+time+not+reached+for+any+host+after+a+long+failure+period%22
Solutions seem to typically be to remove a lock file or rebuild Exim databases.

Hugo, did you look into the possible Exim corruption?

Hey guys,

Our Nabble group still isn't working and we have Nabble-addicted users that haven't been able to post messages for 1.5 month now. Could you try to help us out somehow? The way I interpret the error message indicates this is a problem on Nabble's side, not on the mailing list server mirrored by the group.

If everything else fails, maybe you could recreate the mirror, and reimport the messages?

Thanks
Mike

Dear ad-min,

Please unsubscribe from the forum to which you are subscribed. (It will be either "Nabble Support" or "Free Support") to stop receiving the messages you do not want. Go to each in turn and select: Options

Providing you are logged into Nabble Support and the forum shows your chosen Nabble Support username to the top right, The top option on the Options menu will either show:

Subscribe via email
or
Your subscription: Nabble Support (edit)
or
Your subscription: Free Support (edit)

If it is either of the latter two, select it and click the "Unsubscribe" button you find on the page that appears.

The options available are:

Subscribe by email

Embed post

The account settings include:

Remove your account: = remove your account and all your posts from Nabble Support

I can remove the account but that seems self-defeating as I just want to view support forum posts – no postings – no e-mails ------------but how?

I also want to ensure that if I remove the forum account it will have no effect on the other forum I am running.

RE: Nabble posts not being delivered to java.net mailing list

GregChapman
Let's try another approach:

Check the footer of each message you receive. It should contain three statements:

• If you reply to this email, your message will be added to the discussion below: [URL]
• To start a new topic under [forum name], [email address]
• To unsubscribe from [forum name], visit [URL]

Have you clicked on that final URL?
I also want to ensure that if I remove the forum account it will have no
effect on the other forum I am running.
Your registration as a user at Nabble Support creates a completely separate account from any that you may have created when starting a forum of your own on Nabble.

As you suggest, it would be self defeating to remove your Nabble Support account.

It seems our support thread was hijacked by ad-min.

I'd like to clarify that we still need help to solve our non-functional Nabble mirror.
Please help us.

Re: Nabble posts not being delivered to java.net mailing list

Mike Wilson
I'm the admin of the Nabble mirror and of the mailing list at java.net. I'm not administrator of java.net servers though.

Our list policy at java.net is quite open so non-subscribers (including spam) end up in the admin mailbox for manual accept/reject. I have seen nothing from Nabble there.

As I wrote previously, the bounce mail returned when trying to post through Nabble indicates that databases are corrupted on Nabble's exim server, so the mails seem to never leave Nabble.

Re: Nabble posts not being delivered to java.net mailing list

Mike Wilson
Here's a few things you could check out (maybe you have tried already, but anyway).
It's clear that the problem is reported by your Exim server. I can't judge if you are running Exim on both, or only one, of the jim and sam servers, but check this on the ones that do run Exim:

1) Is java.net's mail server reachable from your host?
Check by doing
  telnet acsinet40.oracle.com 25
and see if you get the
  220 acsinet40.oracle.com EG5500/SMTP Ready.
response.

If this does work, continue with:

2) Look up Exim's reject log file, as described on
http://www.exim.org/exim-html-current/doc/html/spec_html/ch-log_files.html
and look for rejected messages from our list, you find some of them in this thread:
http://dwr.2114559.n2.nabble.com/Nabble-problems-td7580651.html
(you are welcome to post new messages there if you need fresh data)

Does the log entry explain the problem?
If not, look at:

3) Look at your Exim retry rules and see if they can explain the behaviour, the rules are described on
http://www.exim.org/exim-html-current/doc/html/spec_html/ch-retry_configuration.html

If the cause still isn't found:

4) Maybe clearing the retry database could be an option
http://support.createhosting.co.nz/knowledgebase.php?action=displayarticle&id=53
cd /var/spool/exim/db
rm -f retry retry.lockfile
rm -f wait-remote_smtp wait-remote_smtp.lockfile
service exim restart

As described in the comments of this post
http://linuxstuffs.wordpress.com/2009/04/16/exim-retry-time-not-reached-for-any-host-after-a-long-failure-period/
it is then also possible to resend waiting mail using
exim4 -qf

I'm making some tests.
Your list receive some email requests from Nabble, I don't understand why it doesn't receive messages.

Re: Nabble posts not being delivered to java.net mailing list

Mike Wilson
The last message from Nabble that made it to the list was sent April 19.

Are you saying that you have verified that posts are actually being sent from your servers to the java.net mail server?
The error message we see from your Exim server is a message that is usually only issued when Exim decides not to even try to deliver the message.

Best regards
Mike
