Making a forum private

Fee
Hi, I am currently manager for a private MSN group but as you may know
MSN are closing their groups next February which means we have to look for a new home.  One of my members has told me about Nabble 2 and I have created a forum already.  In the introduction I read that forums can be private so that no one else can see them, apart from my members, but now I have created my forum I can't work out how to make it private.
Can you help me please?

Hi. I am a new user of Nabble and have been invited to use the private forum mentioned here but try as I may, I am being instructed that my access is restricted and I cannot get into the forum. I am receiving the posts via email but cannot see the forum for love nor money.

I am very sad.

please help and direct a lost and forlorn poster back to her friends.

Re: Making a forum private

Fee
Hi again
I have worked out how to make my forum private but now one of my members (above)cannot get into the forum.  She has two registered address on my forum both with a Remove button next to them.  I want to remove her but when I click on the remove button a message comes up at the bottom which says Error on page and it won't remove the email addresses.  We are both getting very frustrated over this.  Can anyone help at all?
Apart from this problem I am really liking the format used by Nabble2.

Re: Making a forum private

My friend has changed her email and tried yet again, she still can't get in to my group.

This is from her:

It still says I am unauthorised and I just dont understand what I am doing wrong.

I need someone to get in and tell me how to get in.

I logged in as *******

I found (name of my group) and clicked on it.

It takes me to the unauth user page and tells me to contact Fee. I click on Fee and it gives me the option to email you or read the Test threads.....but I cannot 'see' the forum ....so there is an error somewhere

What is she doing wrong?  If we can't get her in, we will have to look elsewhere and I don't really want to do that.

I added "helena-2" to the authorized user list on your forum, so now the user should be able to go to your forum as "helena-2" and be able to view and post there.

This looks like a bug. Can you tell us what browser version you are using? It will be great if you can post a screenshot shot.

Thanks!

By the way, is MSN really closing all its groups?

Hi Will, thanks for your reply.  Overnight my member managed to get herself in using another email address.  Hopefully the rest of my members will now follow.

I am using IE6.  I am using my hubby's laptop and can't work out how to do a screenshot on it, sorry.  As my member is now in, it's not so much of a problem.

MSN is closing all it's groups next February.

When you compose a post, or reply to a post, there are a row of buttons on top of the compose textbox. One of the button is "Insert image...", click that and you can either upload an image from your computer or copy an image from an URL. Let me know if you have questions or problems.

Sorry for the trouble. Can you be more specific? If you are trying to access a private forum, the forum owner needs to add you to the authorized user list. If you are the forum owners and couldn't add a user to the authorized list, please tell us what you did and also what error message did you see. We'll look into it.

Katie didn't tell me she had registered so she wasn't on the approved members list.  I've done it now so she should be able to access the forum.

I'm sorry but two of my members are having an email problem.
They have both unchecked the box in advanced settings to stop getting email alerts but are still getting loads of alerts in their Inbox.  No one else (so far) seems to be getting the emails and it is driving my two members nuts!  My forum is quite busy atm and they are getting loads.  Can you help please?

Apart from that, all my members so far are really liking Nabble2.

Nope, still can't get in.  My inbox, however, has over a hundred emails in it!

It's asking me for a password but I haven't yet set one up, so I am confused.

And this screen tells me I am not a registered user, yet, if I am not, why is the system sending me so many emails.

Not impressed, sorry!

Hi Katie,

Sorry for the inconvenience.
At the bottom of each email there is a gray text with some explanations.
Example:

What is written at the bottom of your emails?
Please paste the results here.

Thanks in advance,
Hugo Teixeira

Re: Making a forum private

Catastrophica
I have deleted them - sorry, but they were overwhelming!

I have tried again to get in and the system is telling me that I am not registered.  So I tried to register following the link given and went through the exact same procedure as the one I had already used.  So I must have given a password already but it hasn't been stored.

It said my username had already been taken, even though I followed the screenflow from that name to get to that point!  Eh?

So I tried amending the username to a different one and have waited an waited for an acknowledgment email - none has arrived.

Your UI simply doesn't make any sense!

OK, the email finally just arrived.  I clicked through, it said my registration had been completed.  But then, when I clicked continue, it gave me this:

Invalid User Account
This user doesn't exist or has been deleted.

How loopy is that? - Registration and deletion in the same instant!  Clearly you have major issues with your registration process.

And yet, it has still changed my name!  Bonkers!

It takes a few minutes before you can see your account page.
It works now, see http://n2.nabble.com/user/UserNodes.jtp?user=116023

Also, unregistered users can pick any name when they post.
Registered users must choose a unique name because - in this case - they represent a unique email.

Re: Making a forum private

Catastrophica
That still doesn't explain the endless hoops you have to jump through - it's taken three attempts at registering to finally get there, and of course, I still can't access the Light and Fluffy forum.

I'm sorry to be critical, but I build online communities for a living and would be absolutely mortified if someone signing up to one of mine encountered the issues I have found here - and I am not even in and able to participate properly yet!

Anyway, it seems I now have a presence here, so problem solved for now - let's hope that that presence can now be admitted to the forum I want to use!!

By the way, I have been having a bit of browse about seeing as I'm waiting.....  Did you know that, if a user goes to browse a forum which has adopted a particular CSS / stylesheet / skin (whatever terminology you prefer) that style is then carried back with the user to the forum list page?  Did you want it to do that??

Now that you have a registered account, please ask Fee to authorize you in the Light and Fluffy forum.

Sure, user account pages (and also help articles) must follow the style of the forum you have navigated from. Imagine that you visit a forum that has a dark background (e.g., black) and then you click on a user to see his/her profile. If suddenly the background becomes white, you eyes would feel a strong impact. Theoretically, user account pages (and help articles) are part of your forum and should look the same. But if you open a link to a user profile (without visiting any forum first), then you will see Nabble's standard look.
Isn't that reasonable?
