Log In Log Out Issue

Camo
I have created 2 different forums (using different emails for registration with nabble)
These are on separate pages.
For both applications I have registered (using different emails for registration with each application)

After logging in to either application, I dont see a 'log out' link. At top right it still says log in or register.
My users will find this confusing, can you please explain if I have been in error for the above reason, or what I can do to fix this?
Thankyou

I find it confusing too! If you are logged in the Login/Register links should disappear and be replaced with your username. There is no logout link on the main screen. Instead you need to click the username link and the logout option will appear on a menu.

If you can still see the login/register links then I would assume that you are NOT logged in.

In view of your various experiments and rapidly changing activities recently, it is possible you have managed to confuse the cookies that Nabble leave on your machine. My best suggestion is that you clear all your Nabble cookies and hope that sorts it out.

(BTW, you still seem to have a forum and sub-forum on your pages at:
http://www.camosreptiles.com.au/forum.php
and
http://www.camosreptiles.com.au/classifieds.php
which doesn't tie in with your description above. I assume you have another page with the second forum?)

1. Im using google Chrome incidently. Can I set topics to appear in reverse order, aka, newest at top?

2. If somebody registers at www.camosreptiles.com.au/forum.php will they be able to log in with the same details at www.camosreptiles.com.au/classifieds.php? If they leave one and go to the other, are they still logged in? aka, will registering at one, also register them at the other?
3. My custom css (body transparent, fails to work in IE 7 i just discovered, is there a workaround?
4. Is there any kind of pagination? How many topics or messages display in a vertical list or forum.?
Thankyou.
5. when setting sub forum permissions, what does 'Authors' mean? If I disallow authors from doing anything, does this prevent users posting via email?

p.s At www.camosreptiles.com.au/forum.php

under 'options' I dont have the 'change appearance' where I can chose 'topic veiw' by default! ?

at www.camosreptiles.com.au/classifieds.php, There is and I changed it.

P.S Iv'e copied your own FAQ for my members, it came up when I searched, I hope this is ok, as my members will find it very useful. If your not ok with it, please let me know and Ill remove the post.
cheers

Camo... Are you using the Nabble Template softwear? My End of Page is not nicely defined like yours... I have to set up my website footer miles down the page so that it will fit in with 'most' forum pages...

Anne, what is Nabble template software???
I just have my webpage where my forum is embedded, structured like that.
I haven't experienced any oversized pages issues yet since my forum is not yet avail to my customers
but If this happens, I have a ready solution that may work for you.
Thanks For the idea, I hadn't thought of that.

In your Header section between <head> and </head> tags

*change height and width numbers as needed, maybe use % instead of px for width, say 98% or 99%
So the forum scrollbar is inside your own, the forum itself wont be cut off width wise either.
please look at my forum and click the FAQ thread (its big) to see it working. :)

<style type="text/css"> <!-- div.scroll { height: 500px; width: 700px; overflow: auto; border: 0px; background-color: #clear; padding: 8px; scrollbar-face-color:#00CC33; scrollbar-arrow-color:#00CC33; scrollbar-track-color:#00CC33; scrollbar-shadow-color:#000000; scrollbar-highlight-color:#000000; scrollbar-3dlight-color:#00CC33; scrollbar-darkshadow-color:#00CC33; } --> </style>
In your Body between <body> and </body> tags where you want your forum to appear

<center><div class="scroll"style="FILTER: chroma(color=#00CC33)" allowTransparency>

YOUR FORUM EMBED CODE GOES HERE

</div></center>

Hopefully, that will have been a one off and will have settled down by now.

1. Can I set topics to appear in reverse order, aka, newest at top?
They appear with the newest at the top by default - unless you choose to pin a topic. I'm not sure how you could get them in any other order.

2. If somebody registers at www.camosreptiles.com.au/forum.php will they be able to log in with the same details at www.camosreptiles.com.au/classifieds.php?
The last time I looked, one of those is a sub-forum of the other - so there is only one forum. Once logged in you can move between forum and sub-forum at will with no further logging in needed.

If they leave one and go to the other, are they still logged in?
Yes!

will registering at one, also register them at the other?
Yes!

3. My custom css (body transparent, fails to work in IE 7 i just discovered, is there a workaround?
I reported that bug a while ago. It was sorted... though perhaps I was on IE8 at the time. I've just updated to IE9. I would have thought it rare that anyone is still on IE7.

4. Is there any kind of pagination? How many topics or messages display in a vertical list or forum.?
You set that under OPTIONS > EDITOR > CHANGE APPEARANCE > NUMBER OF TOPICS.

5. when setting sub forum permissions, what does 'Authors' mean? If I disallow authors from doing anything, does this prevent users posting via email?
Authors are the authors of posts! If you disallow any of their default permissions you stop authors editing their own posts.

p.s At www.camosreptiles.com.au/forum.php
under 'options' I dont have the 'change appearance'
That's because it is a sub-forum and its appearance is inherited from its parent forum.

where I can chose 'topic veiw' by default! ?
You can't! It's down to the visitor to click that option on arrival at the forum.

P.S Iv'e copied your own FAQ for my members, it came up when I searched, I hope this is ok
No problem! But you'll probably need to edit it slightly as I recall there may be a couple of examples mentioned that are only relevant to that site.

Hi Anne,

Unfortunately the "Site Builder" software you use is the kind that builds almost everything using absolutely positioned <div> tags. It's a spaghetti of code that it almost impossible to decipher. I fear that Camo's suggestions will not be easy to implement using your current software. I fear that probably, the best thing you can do is switch to a better editor and rebuild from scratch the basic header, menu and footer you use. Then it will be easy to do what Camo suggests.

Ahhh! God Im so Thick sometimes, Sorry Mate, I get It now, I beleived I had two separate Applications.
No wonder. I think the reason I had an Issue Logging out was because I had registered at the subforum (/forum) aswell, with a different Email!!
Now Ive changed It, email, password and name to the same for the parent, But the issue remains,
still get those errors. Is it because they are on different Pages of my site? Can that be fixed somehow?
Can the subforum (/forum) be Replaced with a new code? Will that make it a seperate application?

5. when setting sub forum permissions, what does 'Authors' mean? If I disallow authors from doing anything, does this prevent users posting via email?
Authors are the authors of posts! If you disallow any of their default permissions you stop authors editing their own posts.

Why Is 'Edit_App' set to 'True' by default and unchangable? Are you sure Authors means Members?
THIS is confusing! Doesnt 'App' refer to The forum itself?

Re: Log In Log Out Issue

Peter <Nabble>
Camo, first of all, do you want them to be separate applications? because if you do, you just have to create another forum, replace the code in one of the pages and that's all. I suppose some (if not all) your login issues would be solved.

Re: Log In Log Out Issue

Camo
Ok Nabble Guys,
After A very longprocess of elimenation, I've discovered its A google chrome browser Issue!
It dosent happen in Firefox, or IE. (just incidently, background transparency dosent work in firefox either)
I havent tried with Safari or Opera yet.
Has anyone else using google chrome reported a bug or issue with logging out (see error 500 message above)?
I may reinstall Google chrome and see if that helps, meanwhile, since It only seems to happening to me, maybe you can find out whats the problem at nabbles servers please?
Im afraid I may be speaking too soon, that This bug may effect my Users (when I get some)
I dont have another Email to register and check, maybe one of you guys could do that for me? :)

Camo... I couldn't find your FAQs...

Re: Log In Log Out Issue

Camo
Sorry Anne, I had To delete and rebuild the forum and I havent gone and reposted yet, till the log out issue is fixed.
I did look at your source code after Greg's comment and I though hes right, its a bit nightmarish (:))
I think you'll be able to use my idea above.
It really does work neatly. Im guessing you have an admin panel, that you have access to with various boxes, such as Head, Body and Footer ? You may have to experiment with the placing of the Body part, Either in the body or the even the footer itself, and see how it looks. I didnt see a Nabble code in your body so Im assuming its In your footer?
If you go To My Classifieds Now, Ive Added sub forums, so you can see How it works, (does the same with posts themselves.)
Cheers

Yes, we did some changes to login to fix it. I'm glad to hear it works now.
Any more issues?

Why Is 'Edit_App' set to 'True' by default and unchangable?
You have misread it! It is View that is true and unchangeable for Administrators. As the forum owner, until you add others to assist you, you are the only member of the "Administrator" group and if you were able to remove the View permission the entire forum would become inaccessible to you.

THIS is confusing! Doesnt 'App' refer to The forum itself?
Yes, App does refer to the current application. Editing the Application refers to changing the application type, i.e. to "Mixed", "Board", "Gallery" etc. That's why that permission uses the generic "App" name, rather than specifying "Forum". You are unlikely to want your users to change the Appication type so that is why the default is that only Administrators can change it.

Are you sure Authors means Members?
I may have confused you with loose use of the term "Member".  Explanation follows:

By default, Nabble allows anyone to see (View) your forum post new messages (Create_topic) and reply (Reply) to existing messages. They don't even need to register! Hence "Anyone" has these permissions by default.

As it is convention for forums to require registration before posting, Nabble also provides a higher class of user called "Authenticated". By default the only additional permission that class has is to see the list of members. However, the expectation is that you would remove the permission of "Anyone" (i.e. the general public) to post and reply and add that permission to the "Authenticated" group (so that only those registered can post and reply). Some forums would not even allow the public to view the contents of the forum, hence the "View" permission might be removed from "Anyone" as well.

Further, many forums will offer additional benefits to those who pay a fee or contribute in some other way to the community. Typically, such a status would allow them to see and post in additional areas (sub-forums in Nabble jargon) which may not even be visible to the public or registered users. Nabble allows for this with a predefined group called "Members". As with the Authenticated group, by default this only has one additional permission, to see members.

If you wish to implement such a two tier membership, first you need to create a sub-forum and set member permissions for that sub-forum to remove the ability of those in the "Anyone" or "Authenticated" group to view (possibly!), post or reply from it, while adding those permissions to the "Members" group. (In this Support forum, it is done in reverse. "Anyone" can view both the Premium and Free forums. "Authenticated" can additionally, post and reply in the Free sub-forum, but only "Members" can post and reply in the Premium forum.) In your case you might want "Members" to post in both your forums but "Authenticated" users only to be allowed to post in your "Classified" sub-forum.

Note how, at the top-level forum, you can either keep the "Default" permission for any setting or change it to a "Custom" value, but for a sub-forum, the default is to "Inherit" its settings from its parent forum, although, as with the top level forum, you can set a "Custom" value for any setting.

In summary, you might want to think of it as designed to enable you to create a system where:

Anyone = General Public
Authenticated = Registered users
Members = Registered users with Added Benefits

However, Nabble is entirely flexible. Should you want it, it allows you to create an additional "Sellers" group and setting a special set of permissions for that that would distinguish them from both registered users and those awarded additional member privileges over the ordinary registered user.
